Key Responsibilities of SVP, Commercial Banking with a National Financial Institution – Chicago, IL

Strategic Leadership & Market Growth

Develop and execute a comprehensive business plan to drive loan and deposit growth, expand market share, and increase profitability within the Chicago commercial banking sector. Identify and capitalize on new market opportunities and industry trends.

Team Development & Management

Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of Relationship Managers, Portfolio Managers, and support staff. Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture through effective coaching, performance management, and professional development. Set clear objectives and hold the team accountable for achieving aggressive sales and service goals.

Business Development & Client Acquisition

Proactively source, develop, and close new, profitable commercial banking relationships with middle-market companies (typically $20MM – $500MM in annual revenue). Leverage personal networks, centers of influence (COIs), and community involvement to build a robust pipeline.

Portfolio Management & Credit Quality

Oversee the management of a complex commercial loan portfolio, ensuring strong asset quality and adherence to the bank’s credit policies and risk appetite. Provide expert guidance on complex credit structures, underwriting, and loan documentation. Ensure the team maintains a disciplined approach to the entire risk management framework.

Client Relationship Management

Serve as the senior relationship executive for the division’s most significant clients. Deepen existing relationships by understanding their business needs and providing sophisticated, value-added financial solutions in partnership with Treasury Management, Capital Markets, Wealth Management, and other internal product partners.

Financial & Operational Oversight

Assume full P&L responsibility for the Chicago commercial banking unit. Develop annual budgets, monitor financial performance against goals, and manage expenses effectively. Ensure operational excellence and compliance with all banking regulations and internal policies.

Community & Brand Ambassadorship

Represent the institution with distinction in the local business and civic communities. Actively participate in industry-related organizations and events to enhance the bank’s brand visibility and reputation as a leading financial partner in Chicago.

Requirements for the SVP, Commercial Banking with a National Financial Institution – Chicago, IL

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in commercial banking, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership role managing a team of commercial bankers and a significant P&L.

Market Knowledge

Extensive and current knowledge of the Chicago metropolitan area and Midwest regional economy. A well-established network of local business owners, executives, and COIs is essential.

Credit Expertise

Formal credit training and a deep understanding of commercial credit analysis, underwriting, and complex loan structuring. Proven ability to prudently manage credit risk within a large and diverse portfolio.

Proven Sales Acumen

A verifiable track record of success in generating new business, exceeding sales targets, and driving revenue growth in a competitive market.

Leadership Skills

Exceptional leadership presence with the ability to recruit, develop, and motivate top talent. Must be a strategic thinker who can translate vision into actionable results.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

Superior verbal and written communication, presentation, and negotiation skills. The ability to effectively interact with and influence C-level executives, board members, and community leaders.
