As the CTO, you will be the senior-most technology executive in the organization, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serving as a vital member of the executive leadership team. You will be entrusted with the monumental responsibility of defining and executing the company’s technological vision, strategy, and long-range roadmap. This role requires a leader who can operate at the intersection of deep technical expertise, strategic business acumen, and inspirational leadership. You will be the primary architect of an innovation engine that anticipates future battlefield requirements, counters emerging threats, and capitalizes on disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, quantum computing, and advanced cyber warfare capabilities.
Operating from Huntsville, also known as “The Rocket City,” places you at the epicenter of military, space, and technology development, with close proximity to key clients at Redstone Arsenal, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, and the Missile Defense Agency. You will steer the company’s entire Research and Development (R&D) portfolio, guide a world-class team of engineers and scientists, and ensure the flawless execution of complex, high-stakes programs. Key Responsibilities of CTO, Defense Systems – Huntsville, AL
Strategic Technology and Innovation Leadership
You will be the ultimate owner of the company’s technology vision. This involves crafting, articulating, and relentlessly driving a comprehensive technology strategy that aligns with corporate objectives, market opportunities, and the evolving needs of the Department of Defense (DoD). You will champion a culture of forward-thinking innovation, establishing and overseeing a robust R&D pipeline that explores emerging technologies and translates them into tangible, mission-critical capabilities. Your leadership will ensure the company remains at the forefront of the industry.
Executive Leadership and Team Development
As a key member of the C-suite, you will provide expert counsel to the CEO and Board of Directors on all technology-related matters. You will lead, mentor, and expand a large, multi-disciplinary organization of engineers, scientists, and technical program managers. Fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, continuous learning, and accountability is paramount. You will be responsible for attracting, developing, and retaining top-tier technical talent in a highly competitive market.
Engineering Excellence and Product Delivery
You will have ultimate oversight of the entire product development lifecycle, from initial concept and architecture through to design, integration, testing, and deployment. This includes ensuring the development of resilient, secure, and scalable systems that meet and exceed rigorous military standards. You will implement and enforce best-in-class engineering practices, including Agile methodologies, DevSecOps, and model-based systems engineering (MBSE), to optimize for quality, speed, and efficiency.
Government and Industry Engagement
You will serve as the company’s chief technology evangelist, building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders across the DoD, intelligence community, federal research laboratories (e.g., DARPA, AFRL), and other government agencies. You will actively engage with industry partners, academic institutions, and technology consortia to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and inform your strategic technology roadmap.
Technology Compliance and Security
You will ensure that all technological operations, products, and processes adhere to the highest standards of security and compliance. This includes navigating the complex landscape of government regulations such as ITAR, EAR, and DFARS. A critical part of your role will be to champion and ensure enterprise-wide adherence to the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), safeguarding sensitive information and maintaining the trust of your government clients.
Financial and Resource Management
You will develop and manage the multi-million dollar technology and R&D budget. This requires making strategic investment decisions, allocating resources effectively to high-priority initiatives, and ensuring a strong return on investment. You will work closely with finance and program management to ensure technology initiatives are delivered on time and within budget.
Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy
In collaboration with legal counsel, you will oversee the company’s intellectual property strategy. This includes identifying and protecting novel inventions through patents, managing trade secrets, and pursuing technology licensing opportunities to create and sustain a competitive advantage.

Security Clearance
An active Top Secret (TS) security clearance is mandatory for this position. Candidates with a current TS/SCI clearance are highly preferred. The ability to obtain and maintain this level of clearance is a non-negotiable condition of employment.
Education
A Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a relevant technical discipline such as Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Physics, or a related field is required.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive experience in technology leadership roles, with at least 10 years spent specifically within the U.S. aerospace and defense industry. Proven experience serving as a CTO, VP of Engineering, Chief Scientist, or a similar senior executive role within a defense prime or a significant sub-contractor is essential.
Technical Domain Expertise
Demonstrated deep, hands-on expertise across a broad range of defense technologies. This includes, but is not limited to: C5ISR (Command, Control, Computers, Communications, Cyber, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), missile defense systems, autonomous platforms, artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), advanced sensor and radar systems, electronic warfare, and military-grade cybersecurity.
Proven Leadership
A documented track record of leading, inspiring, and scaling large, high-performing technical organizations. Must possess exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including boards of directors and senior government officials.
Government Programs Experience
Extensive experience working directly on DoD programs is required. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the government acquisition lifecycle, experience with proposal development (B&P), and a history of successful program capture and execution.
Strategic Vision
The ability to think strategically and translate business needs into a clear, actionable technology roadmap. Must be adept at technology scouting and evaluating the potential impact of emerging trends on the defense landscape.
Location
This position is based full-time in Huntsville, AL. The candidate must be willing to reside in or relocate to the Huntsville area. A comprehensive relocation package is available.
