Key Responsibilities of VP, Data Governance & Quality with a Global Bank – New York, NY

As the Vice President of Data Governance & Quality, you will be entrusted with a broad range of responsibilities that are central to the bank’s data strategy. Your duties will encompass strategic planning, framework development, operational execution, and stakeholder engagement.

Strategy & Leadership:

  • Develop, articulate, and execute a multi-year enterprise data governance and data quality strategy aligned with the bank’s overall business objectives.
  • Champion the value of data as a strategic business asset and foster a culture of data ownership, accountability, and stewardship across all departments.
  • Establish and chair the Data Governance Council, facilitating cross-functional collaboration to resolve data issues, approve data policies, and prioritize data-related initiatives.
  • Define and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the effectiveness of the data governance program and demonstrate its value to senior leadership.
  • Provide thought leadership on emerging trends and technologies in data management, governance, and quality, and assess their potential impact on the bank.

Framework & Policy Development:

  • Design, implement, and maintain the enterprise-wide data governance framework, including policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Establish and manage a comprehensive business glossary, data dictionary, and data lineage documentation to ensure a common understanding of key data elements.
  • Define data ownership and stewardship roles and responsibilities, and implement a robust stewardship program to support these roles.
  • Develop and oversee the data classification framework to ensure sensitive data is appropriately identified, protected, and handled in accordance with policy and regulations.
  • Create and manage processes for data issue identification, escalation, and remediation.

Data Quality Management:

  • Establish an enterprise data quality framework, including the development of data quality rules, thresholds, and monitoring processes.
  • Implement and manage data profiling, cleansing, and enrichment activities to proactively improve the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of critical data assets.
  • Develop and maintain data quality dashboards and scorecards to provide transparency into the health of the bank’s data.
  • Lead root cause analysis for data quality issues and work with business and IT partners to implement lasting solutions.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management:

  • Ensure the data governance program effectively supports compliance with relevant regulations, such as the BCBS 239 principles, GDPR, CCPA, and other financial services regulations.
  • Partner with the Chief Risk Officer and Chief Compliance Officer to integrate data governance controls into the bank’s overall risk management framework.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external auditors and regulators on all matters related to data governance and quality.

We are seeking a distinguished professional with a proven track record of success in leading large-scale data governance programs within the financial services industry.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 10-12 years of experience in data management, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role focused specifically on data governance and/or data quality.
  • Extensive experience within the banking or financial services industry is mandatory, with a deep understanding of financial products, processes, and regulatory environments.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing enterprise-wide data governance frameworks, policies, and standards from the ground up.
  • Proven ability to lead and influence in a large, complex, and matrixed global organization.
  • Expert knowledge of data governance best practices, data quality methodologies, and master data management (MDM) principles.
  • Hands-on experience with leading data governance and quality tools such as Collibra, Informatica Axon/IDQ, or Alation.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements impacting data, including BCBS 239, CCPA, and GDPR.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (MBA or MS) is highly preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or similar are a strong plus.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and modern data architecture concepts.
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive leadership.
