Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the VP, Corporate Controller will be the principal accounting officer of the company, responsible for the integrity of all financial information and reporting. This executive will serve as a critical business partner to the CFO and the broader leadership team, providing strategic financial guidance and operational excellence. The ideal candidate is a seasoned accounting professional with a proven track record of scaling accounting functions in a pre-IPO or public technology company environment. The VP, Corporate Controller will have a broad range of responsibilities, encompassing all aspects of the company’s accounting operations and financial reporting. Success in this role requires a hands-on approach combined with the ability to think strategically and build for the future.

Strategic Leadership & Team Development

Recruit, train, and mentor a high-performing global accounting team. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Act as a key strategic partner to the CFO, providing critical insights on all accounting-related matters and contributing to the company’s overall financial strategy.

Public Company Readiness & SEC Reporting

Lead the company’s efforts to prepare for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Develop and manage the external financial reporting process, including the preparation and filing of all SEC filings (S-1, 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K). Ensure all reporting is in compliance with SEC regulations and U.S. GAAP.

Global Accounting Operations

Oversee all aspects of the day-to-day accounting operations, including the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes. Manage general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and stock administration. Ensure the timely and accurate delivery of financial statements and reports to internal and external stakeholders.

Technical Accounting & Policy

Serve as the company’s primary subject matter expert on complex technical accounting issues. Research, evaluate, and document the accounting implications of complex transactions, such as revenue recognition (ASC 606), business combinations, and stock-based compensation. Develop and maintain the company’s accounting policies and procedures.

Internal Controls & SOX Compliance

Design, implement, and maintain a robust system of internal controls over financial reporting. Lead the company’s Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance efforts, including risk assessment, process documentation, and testing. Act as the primary liaison with external and internal auditors, managing the annual audit and quarterly reviews.

Financial Systems & Process Automation

Drive the continuous improvement and scaling of financial systems (ERP, consolidation tools, etc.) to support the company’s rapid growth. Identify opportunities for automation and process optimization to enhance efficiency and accuracy within the accounting function. Lead the selection and implementation of new financial technologies as needed.

Tax & Treasury

Oversee the company’s global tax strategy, planning, and compliance in partnership with external advisors. Manage federal, state, and international tax filings. Support treasury functions, including cash management, forecasting, and banking relationships to ensure optimal liquidity.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner closely with FP&A, legal, HR, and business leaders across the organization. Provide financial data and insights to support budgeting, forecasting, and strategic decision-making. Ensure seamless integration between accounting and other business functions.

Requirements for the VP, Corporate Controller with a Technology Unicorn – Seattle, WA

We are seeking a candidate with a distinguished track record of financial leadership and a deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities within a high-growth technology company.

Experience

A minimum of 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience. A combination of experience in a ‘Big 4’ public accounting firm and a leadership role within a high-growth, global technology or SaaS company is strongly preferred.

Public Company Expertise

Direct experience leading an accounting team through an IPO process or operating as a Controller or Assistant Controller in a publicly traded company is mandatory. Deep familiarity with SEC reporting requirements and the public company environment is essential.

Certification & Education

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is a non-negotiable requirement. An MBA is considered a significant plus.

Technical Acumen

Extensive and deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SOX 404, and SEC regulations. Proven experience in navigating complex accounting matters and implementing new accounting standards.

Systems Proficiency

Hands-on experience with modern ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and other financial software. A demonstrated ability to leverage technology to scale operations is critical.

Leadership Skills

Proven ability to build, lead, and mentor a high-performing, diverse, and globally distributed team. Must possess exceptional executive presence and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex financial concepts to a wide range of audiences.
