Key Responsibilities of Chief Technology Officer – Cambridge, MA
The Chief Technology Officer will assume a broad range of responsibilities, encompassing strategic leadership, team management, and technical oversight. Success in this role will be measured by the ability to innovate, execute, and lead effectively across the organization.
Technology Vision & Strategy
Develop and execute a comprehensive technology roadmap that aligns with the company’s strategic objectives, market opportunities, and long-term vision. Continuously evaluate emerging technologies, competitive landscapes, and clinical needs to ensure the company maintains its competitive edge.
Research & Development (R&D) Leadership
Direct all aspects of the R&D organization, including new product development, sustaining engineering, and exploratory research. Foster a dynamic and innovative R&D culture that encourages creativity, risk-taking, and rapid iteration.
Product Development Lifecycle Management
Oversee the end-to-end product development process, from ideation and feasibility studies through design, verification, validation, and transfer to manufacturing. Implement and refine best-practice development methodologies (e.g., Agile, Stage-Gate) tailored for the medical device industry.
Regulatory & Quality Compliance
Ensure all technology and product development activities adhere to the highest standards of quality and safety. You will be responsible for navigating complex FDA regulatory standards (e.g., 21 CFR Part 820), ISO 13485, and other international regulations. Collaborate closely with the regulatory affairs and quality assurance teams to prepare for and manage submissions and audits.
Team Building & Mentorship
Recruit, develop, and retain a world-class team of engineers, scientists, and technical staff. Provide strong leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to cultivate talent and build a high-performance organization.
Intellectual Property (IP) Management
Lead the development and execution of the company’s IP strategy. Work with legal counsel to identify, protect, and expand the company’s patent portfolio and trade secrets, creating a defensible long-term competitive advantage.
Budget & Resource Allocation
Develop and manage the technology and R&D budgets, ensuring optimal allocation of resources to align with strategic priorities. Track and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) related to project timelines, budget adherence, and departmental efficiency.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as a key member of the executive team, collaborating closely with Clinical, Marketing, Sales, Operations, and Finance to ensure seamless product launches and lifecycle management. Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
External Partnerships & Alliances
Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations, key opinion leaders (KOLs), and technology vendors to accelerate innovation and access new capabilities.
Requirements for the Chief Technology Officer – Cambridge, MA
We are seeking a seasoned executive with a proven track record of success in the medical device sector. The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of technical depth, strategic thinking, and inspirational leadership.
Educational Background
An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related scientific field is required.
Executive Leadership Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the medical device industry, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., VP of R&D, VP of Engineering, CTO) with significant team and budget management responsibilities.
Technical Expertise
Demonstrated experience leading the development of complex medical devices from concept to market clearance/approval. Experience with Class II or Class III devices is highly preferred. Expertise in areas such as software as a medical device (SaMD), electromechanical systems, materials science, and data-driven device technology is a significant plus.
Regulatory Acumen
Deep, hands-on knowledge of the global regulatory landscape for medical devices, including FDA QSR, 510(k) and PMA submission processes, CE Marking, and ISO 13485 quality management systems.
Strategic Mindset
Proven ability to develop and implement technology strategies that result in market-leading products and sustained commercial success. Experience with strategic planning, portfolio management, and technology assessment.
Leadership & Communication Skills
Exceptional ability to lead, influence, and inspire a diverse, multi-disciplinary team. Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to boards of directors, investors, regulatory bodies, and internal teams.
