Key Responsibilities of Chief Commercial Officer – Cambridge, MA

The Chief Commercial Officer will be tasked with a wide range of critical responsibilities, encompassing all facets of the commercial organization. Success in this role will be measured by revenue growth, market share capture, and the successful establishment of the company as a leader in its therapeutic area.

Strategic Commercial Leadership

  • Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive, multi-year commercial strategy that aligns with the company’s overall corporate objectives and financial goals.
  • Provide insightful leadership and direction to the entire commercial organization, including Sales, Marketing, Market Access, and Business Development functions.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor and manage commercial performance, ensuring accountability and a results-oriented culture.
  • Conduct in-depth market analysis to identify new market opportunities, competitive threats, and evolving customer needs, translating insights into actionable strategies.
  • Serve as a key spokesperson for the company, effectively communicating the value proposition of its products to investors, partners, and the broader medical community.

Sales & Revenue Generation

  • Build, scale, and lead a high-performing national and international sales team. This includes recruiting, training, and mentoring top-tier sales talent.
  • Design and implement effective sales compensation plans, territory alignments, and sales processes to maximize productivity and drive aggressive revenue growth.
  • Develop and manage key relationships with hospital systems, Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs), Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs), and key opinion leaders (KOLs).
  • Lead the negotiation of major contracts and pricing agreements, ensuring favorable terms and profitability.
  • Implement and leverage CRM systems and sales analytics tools to forecast revenue, manage the sales pipeline, and optimize sales force effectiveness.

Marketing & Brand Management

  • Oversee the development and execution of innovative marketing plans for successful product launches and sustained market growth.
  • Define and manage the company’s brand identity, positioning, and messaging to ensure a consistent and compelling presence in the market.
  • Lead the creation of marketing collateral, sales tools, and clinical education materials for healthcare professionals and patients.
  • Drive digital marketing initiatives, including website development, social media strategy, and online advertising, to enhance brand visibility and lead generation.
  • Manage public relations, medical communications, and trade show strategies to build thought leadership and market awareness.

Market Access & Reimbursement

  • Develop and execute sophisticated market access and reimbursement strategies to secure optimal coverage and payment from private and public payers.
  • Build a strong health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) function to generate the evidence needed to demonstrate the clinical and economic value of the company’s products.
  • Lead engagement with payers, health technology assessment (HTA) bodies, and policy makers to navigate the complex reimbursement landscape.
  • Stay abreast of changes in healthcare policy and reimbursement models, such as value-based care, and adapt commercial strategies accordingly.

Requirements for the Chief Commercial Officer – Cambridge, MA

The successful candidate will be a seasoned executive with a demonstrated history of commercial success within the medical device industry. We are looking for a leader who combines strategic vision with executional excellence.

Professional Experience

  • A minimum of 15+ years of progressive commercial leadership experience in the medical device or life sciences industry.
  • A proven track record of successfully launching one or more novel medical devices into the US market. International launch experience is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated success in building and scaling commercial organizations from an early stage to significant revenue generation.
  • Extensive experience in developing and executing go-to-market strategies, including direct sales forces, distributor networks, and strategic partnerships.
  • Deep experience in negotiating complex contracts with GPOs, IDNs, and other major healthcare entities.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing a full P&L and developing budgets and financial forecasts.

Skills and Knowledge

  • In-depth understanding of the US healthcare ecosystem, including reimbursement pathways, hospital value analysis committees, and physician adoption drivers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant legal, compliance, and regulatory requirements, including a strong understanding of FDA regulations for medical device promotion and sales.
