Role Overview for VP, Global Supply Chain with an E-commerce Retailer – Indianapolis, IN
As the Vice President of Global Supply Chain, you will be the principal architect and leader of the company’s entire supply chain ecosystem. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, you will have complete ownership of the strategy, execution, and performance of all supply chain functions, including global sourcing, procurement, inventory management, warehousing, order fulfillment, domestic and international logistics, and reverse logistics. This is not just an operational role; it is a highly strategic position that requires a forward-thinking mindset. Key Responsibilities of VP, Global Supply Chain with an E-commerce Retailer – Indianapolis, IN
Strategic Planning & Execution
Develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive global supply chain strategy that aligns with the company’s long-term growth objectives. This includes network design, technology roadmaps, capacity planning, and global trade strategy to support new market entry.
End-to-End Operational Ownership
Provide executive leadership and oversight for all supply chain functions. This includes demand planning, procurement, inventory optimization, management of a multi-node network of fulfillment centers, final-mile delivery, and an efficient returns process.
Financial & Performance Management
Develop and manage the multi-million dollar supply chain budget, including warehousing, labor, and transportation costs. Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, order accuracy, inventory turns, and cost-per-unit. Drive initiatives to optimize costs without sacrificing quality or customer experience.
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, mentor, and inspire a large and geographically dispersed team of supply chain professionals. Cultivate a high-performance culture that emphasizes data-driven decision-making, collaboration, and continuous learning. Structure the organization for scalability and develop a strong leadership pipeline.
Technology & Innovation
Drive the evaluation, selection, and implementation of cutting-edge supply chain technologies, including Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and advanced analytics platforms. Champion the use of automation, AI, and machine learning to improve forecasting, efficiency, and visibility across the supply chain.
Vendor & 3PL Partnership Management
Oversee all strategic relationships with key external partners, including third-party logistics (3PL) providers, ocean freight carriers, parcel carriers, and technology vendors. Lead complex contract negotiations, establish service level agreements (SLAs), and conduct regular business reviews to ensure performance and drive mutual value.
Inventory Strategy & Control
Develop and implement sophisticated inventory management strategies to optimize stock levels across the network, maximize availability, and minimize carrying costs and stockouts. Collaborate closely with the merchandising team on forecasting and demand planning to ensure product flow aligns with commercial plans.
Risk Management & Resiliency
Proactively identify potential risks within the global supply chain, from geopolitical instability and trade compliance issues to supplier viability and logistics disruptions. Develop and implement robust contingency plans and mitigation strategies to build a resilient and adaptable supply chain.
Requirements for the VP, Global Supply Chain with an E-commerce Retailer – Indianapolis, IN
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in supply chain management, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership capacity (Director, Senior Director, or VP level) overseeing a significant scope of operations.
E-commerce & DTC Expertise
Demonstrable and deep experience within a high-volume, fast-paced direct-to-consumer (DTC) e-commerce or omnichannel retail environment is absolutely essential. You must understand the unique challenges and customer expectations of this model.
Global Operations Acumen
Proven experience managing complex, global supply chains, including international sourcing (especially from Asia), import/export logistics, customs compliance, and managing international fulfillment partners.
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Data-Driven & Analytical
Exceptional analytical skills and a proven ability to use data and metrics to drive performance, identify opportunities, and solve complex problems. A deep understanding of end-to-end supply chain management principles is paramount.
Leadership & Influence
An inspiring and collaborative leader with a proven ability to build, develop, and motivate large teams. Must possess executive presence and the ability to effectively communicate and present to C-level executives and the Board of Directors.
Technical Proficiency
Hands-on experience with modern ERP, WMS, and TMS platforms is required. Experience leading technology selection and implementation projects is a significant plus.
Certifications
Professional certifications such as a Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD) from APICS/ASCM are highly desirable.
