Key Responsibilities of Plant Manager (Auto Suppliers) – Detroit, MI Area
Strategic Leadership & Operational Management
Direct and manage all plant operations with overall responsibility for production, maintenance, quality, safety, and other production-related activities. Develop and implement strategies to ensure the plant meets and exceeds production targets, quality standards (IATF 16949), and customer delivery schedules.
Financial Performance & P&L Management
Oversee the plant’s budget, P&L statements, and financial performance. Identify and implement cost reduction initiatives, optimize resource allocation, and drive profitability while maintaining product quality and operational efficiency.
Continuous Improvement & Lean Manufacturing
Champion a culture of continuous improvement, deploying lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and other advanced manufacturing techniques to enhance productivity, reduce waste, improve cycle times, and optimize overall operational flow.
Quality Assurance & Customer Satisfaction
Ensure adherence to stringent automotive quality standards (e.g., IATF 16949). Implement robust quality control systems, address customer concerns promptly, and foster strong relationships with key customers to ensure their satisfaction and loyalty.
Team Development & Employee Engagement
Recruit, train, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of manufacturing professionals. Foster a positive and safe work environment, promote open communication, and drive employee engagement initiatives to build a cohesive and motivated workforce.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
Establish and enforce comprehensive safety programs and environmental policies, ensuring full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA). Promote a proactive safety culture to minimize incidents and maintain a safe working environment for all employees.
Supply Chain & Inventory Management
Collaborate with procurement and logistics teams to optimize the supply chain, manage inventory levels efficiently, and ensure the timely availability of materials while minimizing carrying costs.
Capital Planning & Asset Management
Identify needs for capital investment, justify expenditures, and manage the acquisition and maintenance of plant equipment and infrastructure to ensure long-term operational capability and efficiency.
Reporting & Communication
Provide regular, comprehensive reports on plant performance, key metrics, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership. Effectively communicate goals, progress, and challenges across all levels of the organization.
Requirements for the Plant Manager (Auto Suppliers) – Detroit, MI Area
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, or Manufacturing preferred), Operations Management, Business Administration, or a related technical field from an accredited institution. An MBA or Master’s degree is highly desirable.
Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, with at least 5-7 years in a Plant Manager or equivalent senior operational leadership role within the automotive Tier 1 or Tier 2 supply sector.
Automotive Industry Expertise
Deep and demonstrable understanding of automotive manufacturing processes, industry standards, and customer expectations. Proven experience working with major automotive OEMs.
Technical Proficiency
Strong command of lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies (Green Belt or Black Belt certification highly preferred), Kaizen, 5S, and other continuous improvement tools.
Financial Acumen
Proven track record of managing plant P&L, developing and adhering to budgets, and implementing cost reduction strategies that drive profitability.
Quality Systems Knowledge
Extensive experience with and strong understanding of quality management systems, specifically IATF 16949. Knowledge of ISO 14001 is a plus.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a diverse workforce. Proven ability to build strong teams and foster a collaborative environment.
