Key Responsibilities of VP, Supply Chain Operations with an Automotive OEM – Detroit, MI

Strategic Leadership & Vision

Develop and implement a comprehensive, forward-looking global supply chain strategy that aligns with the company’s long-term growth objectives, particularly in the EV and autonomous vehicle sectors. Champion initiatives that enhance agility, reduce lead times, and build a resilient supply chain capable of withstanding geopolitical and economic volatility.

Global Procurement & Strategic Sourcing

Oversee all procurement activities, from raw materials and components to indirect services. Develop sophisticated sourcing strategies to optimize cost, ensure quality, and guarantee supply continuity. Lead high-stakes negotiations with key global suppliers, establishing long-term partnerships that foster innovation and mutual growth.

Logistics & Network Optimization

Direct the entire global logistics network, including inbound/outbound freight, warehousing, customs compliance, and distribution. Utilize advanced analytics and modeling to continuously optimize transportation routes, carrier performance, and inventory positioning, minimizing costs and environmental impact.

Inventory Management & Control

Implement best-in-class inventory management policies and systems (e.g., SIOP, JIT) to optimize working capital, minimize carrying costs, and prevent stockouts or obsolescence. Ensure accuracy and efficiency across all storage and handling operations.

Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement

Drive a culture of continuous improvement by embedding Lean Six Sigma principles throughout the supply chain. Identify and eliminate waste, streamline processes, and leverage technology to enhance productivity and performance. Champion key performance indicators (KPIs) to monitor progress and drive accountability.

Supplier Relationship Management (SRM)

Cultivate and manage strategic relationships with a diverse global supplier base. Develop robust SRM programs that include performance scorecards, risk assessments, and collaborative development initiatives to ensure suppliers meet stringent quality, cost, and delivery standards.

Technology & Digital Transformation

Lead the adoption and optimization of supply chain technologies, including ERP systems (e.g., SAP S/4HANA), advanced planning systems (APS), and visibility platforms. Leverage data analytics, AI, and machine learning to improve forecasting, planning, and decision-making capabilities.

Risk Management & Resiliency

Develop and maintain a comprehensive supply chain risk management framework. Proactively identify potential risks—including geopolitical instability, natural disasters, supplier financial health, and trade policy changes—and develop robust mitigation and contingency plans.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global supply chain organization. Foster a collaborative, innovative, and results-oriented culture. Attract and retain top talent, building a strong succession pipeline for critical roles within the function.

Financial Acumen & Budgetary Control

Assume full P&L responsibility for the supply chain organization. Develop and manage annual operating budgets, capital expenditure plans, and cost-reduction initiatives. Provide executive-level reporting on financial performance and key supply chain metrics.

Requirements for the VP, Supply Chain Operations with an Automotive OEM – Detroit, MI

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field is required. An MBA or Master’s degree is highly preferred.

Executive Experience

A minimum of 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in supply chain management, with at least 5-7 years in a senior executive role (Director, VP, or equivalent) overseeing a large, complex global supply chain.

Industry Expertise

Deep and extensive experience within the automotive manufacturing industry, preferably with a major OEM or a significant Tier 1 supplier, is mandatory. A thorough understanding of automotive production systems, quality standards (e.g., IATF 16949), and the unique challenges of the industry is essential.

Functional Expertise

Demonstrated mastery across all core supply chain disciplines, including strategic sourcing, global logistics, inventory control, production planning, and supplier management.

Leadership & Influence

Proven ability to lead and inspire large, geographically dispersed teams. Exceptional communication, negotiation, and influencing skills with the ability to build consensus and drive change at all levels of the organization, including the C-suite and Board of Directors.

Strategic & Analytical Mindset

Strong strategic thinking capabilities combined with a data-driven, analytical approach to problem-solving. Experience leveraging advanced analytics and technology to drive supply chain performance.

Global Experience

Must have significant experience managing international supply chains, including navigating complex trade regulations, managing international logistics, and working with a diverse global supplier base.

Certifications

Professional certifications such as Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) from ASCM/APICS or Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) from ISM are highly desirable.
