This is not merely a role of oversight; it is a hands-on, strategic position demanding a leader who can inspire change, foster a culture of relentless continuous improvement, and implement robust systems that yield measurable results in safety, quality, delivery, and cost. Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the VP of Manufacturing Excellence will serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, providing the expertise and direction needed to optimize every facet of the production process. You will be responsible for standardizing best practices, deploying advanced manufacturing methodologies, and mentoring a high-performing team of plant managers and operational leaders.

Strategic Leadership & Vision
Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive, multi-year manufacturing excellence roadmap. This strategy will align with the company’s overall business objectives, focusing on long-term operational scalability, profitability, and market leadership. Champion this vision across the organization to ensure buy-in and engagement from the plant floor to the executive suite.
Lean Transformation & Continuous Improvement
Act as the primary change agent for the enterprise-wide adoption and maturation of Lean methodologies. Lead the deployment of tools such as Kaizen, Value Stream Mapping (VSM), 5S, Standard Work, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), and Poka-Yoke. Foster a culture where continuous improvement is embedded in the daily work of every employee.
Performance Management & KPI Execution
Establish, monitor, and drive improvement for key performance indicators (KPIs) across all plants, including Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), First Time Through (FTT), scrap reduction, on-time delivery, and cost per unit. Implement rigorous data analysis and visual management systems to ensure transparency and accountability.
Operational Standardization
Analyze existing processes across all facilities to identify and eliminate inconsistencies. Develop and implement standardized best practices for all critical manufacturing and business processes to ensure uniformity, predictability, and consistent quality output, regardless of location.
Talent Development & Mentorship
Coach, mentor, and develop plant leadership and operational teams. Build a pipeline of talent capable of leading in a Lean environment. Provide training and resources to enhance the problem-solving capabilities and operational acumen of the entire manufacturing organization.
Quality & Safety Culture Champion
Partner closely with the Quality and EHS departments to ensure that operational excellence initiatives inherently support and enhance a zero-defect, zero-incident culture. Ensure all operations strictly adhere to the automotive quality management system standard IATF 16949 and all relevant safety regulations.
Capital Project & Technology Integration
Provide strategic input on capital expenditure projects, ensuring investments in new equipment and technology are aligned with the operational excellence strategy and provide a strong return on investment. Evaluate and champion the integration of Industry 4.0 technologies, such as automation, IoT, and data analytics, to create ‘smart factories’.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Foster strong collaborative relationships with other executive leaders in Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, and Human Resources. Ensure that manufacturing strategies are fully integrated with new product introductions, supply chain optimization, and financial planning to create seamless value delivery for the customer.
Requirements for the VP, Manufacturing Excellence with an Automotive Supplier – Toledo, OH
Educational Background
A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related technical field is required. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) or an advanced technical degree is strongly preferred.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in manufacturing operations, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., Director, VP) overseeing multiple plant locations.
Industry Expertise
Demonstrable and extensive experience within the automotive manufacturing industry is mandatory. A deep understanding of the dynamics of a Tier 1 or Tier 2 supplier environment, including OEM expectations and quality standards, is essential.
Lean/Six Sigma Mastery
Certified Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt or Black Belt is highly desirable. Must possess an expert-level understanding and a proven track record of successfully implementing a wide range of lean manufacturing tools and methodologies that resulted in significant, quantifiable business improvements.
Transformational Leadership
Proven ability to lead large-scale organizational change and cultural transformation. Must be an exceptional communicator, influencer, and motivator who can inspire teams to embrace new ways of working and strive for excellence.
Financial Acumen
Strong business and financial acumen with experience managing multi-million dollar budgets, analyzing P&L statements, and justifying capital investments through clear business case development.
Technical Aptitude
Solid understanding of modern manufacturing processes, including assembly, machining, stamping, and injection molding. Familiarity with the principles of Industry 4.0 and manufacturing automation is a significant asset.
Problem-Solving Skills
Superior analytical and data-driven problem-solving skills. Must be adept at identifying the root cause of complex operational issues and implementing effective, sustainable countermeasures.
Travel
Ability to travel up to 50% to various manufacturing sites across North America to provide hands-on leadership and support.
