The VP of Logistics & Distribution will be the principal architect and operator of the company’s entire fulfillment and distribution ecosystem. This includes overseeing a network of large-scale distribution centers, managing intricate transportation logistics, and ensuring the seamless flow of goods from suppliers to stores and directly to consumers. You will be responsible for a significant P&L, a large and diverse team, and the critical key performance indicators that define operational success. Key Responsibilities of VP, Logistics & Distribution with a Major Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
Strategic Leadership & Network Design
Develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-year logistics and distribution strategy that supports the company’s growth, profitability, and omnichannel objectives. Continuously analyze and optimize the distribution network footprint, including location, size, and function of fulfillment centers.
P&L and Financial Management
Assume full P&L responsibility for all logistics and distribution operations. Develop and manage annual operating budgets, capital expenditure plans, and financial forecasts. Drive cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality or safety.
Operational Excellence
Direct all inbound and outbound logistics, including receiving, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment (both B2B and D2C), and shipping. Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, order accuracy, cost-per-unit, and inventory turns.
Transportation & Fleet Management
Oversee all domestic and international transportation functions, including carrier selection, contract negotiation, and performance management for all modes (FTL, LTL, parcel, ocean, air). Optimize routing and logistics to minimize transit times and costs.
Team Development & Leadership
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of logistics professionals, including directors, managers, and front-line staff across multiple sites. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement. Implement robust succession planning.
Technology & Innovation
Champion the selection and implementation of advanced supply chain technologies, including Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and automation/robotics. Leverage data analytics and business intelligence to drive informed decision-making.
Inventory Control & Management
Partner with Merchandising and Planning teams to ensure optimal inventory levels across the network. Implement best-in-class inventory control processes, cycle counting programs, and loss prevention measures to ensure accuracy and minimize shrink.
E-commerce & Omnichannel Fulfillment
Spearhead the strategy and execution for direct-to-consumer fulfillment, ensuring a seamless customer experience that meets or exceeds modern delivery expectations. Develop and refine omnichannel capabilities such as ship-from-store and buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS).
Vendor & 3PL Partnership Management
Manage relationships and negotiate contracts with key vendors, including third-party logistics (3PL) providers, carriers, and equipment suppliers. Hold partners accountable to strict service level agreements (SLAs).
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure all logistics and transportation operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA, C-TPAT). Develop and maintain robust safety programs and disaster recovery plans to mitigate risk within the supply chain.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as a key strategic partner to executive leadership and collaborate closely with heads of Retail Operations, Merchandising, IT, Finance, and Human Resources to ensure alignment and drive enterprise-wide initiatives.
Continuous Improvement
Drive a Lean/Six Sigma mindset throughout the organization. Identify and eliminate waste, streamline processes, and empower teams to innovate and improve daily operations. Continuously evaluate and implement industry advancements and supply chain management best practices to maintain a competitive edge.
Requirements for the VP, Logistics & Distribution with a Major Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is strongly preferred.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in supply chain and logistics, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership role (Director or VP level) overseeing a large, complex distribution network.
Industry Expertise
Significant experience within the retail industry is essential. Experience with a major national retailer with a significant brick-and-mortar and e-commerce presence is highly desirable.
Operational Scale
Proven experience managing multiple large-scale distribution centers (500,000+ sq. ft.) and a large, multi-level organization of both exempt and non-exempt employees.
Financial Acumen
Demonstrated experience managing a large P&L, developing complex budgets, and driving significant cost-saving initiatives. Strong negotiation skills are a must.
Omnichannel Mastery
Deep understanding and hands-on experience in building and scaling omnichannel fulfillment operations, including e-commerce (D2C), retail replenishment (B2B), and final-mile delivery.
Technological Proficiency
Expertise with modern supply chain systems, including Tier-1 WMS and TMS platforms. Experience leading technology implementations and leveraging data analytics for strategic planning.
Strategic Vision
Ability to think strategically and translate broad corporate goals into clear, actionable logistics plans. Proven track record of successful network design and optimization projects.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. A proven ability to inspire, motivate, and develop large teams and to influence stakeholders across an organization, including at the C-suite level.
Analytical Mindset
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach to decision-making and process improvement.
Location
Must be based in or willing to relocate to the greater Los Angeles, CA area. Regular travel to distribution centers and corporate offices will be required.
