As the SVP, you will be the face of the bank’s commercial real estate division in the region. Strategic Leadership and Business Development
Develop and execute a comprehensive business development strategy to achieve loan growth, fee income, and profitability targets for the Denver market. Actively call on and cultivate relationships with a wide network of commercial real estate developers, investors, brokers, and other centers of influence to generate a consistent pipeline of high-quality lending opportunities. Represent the bank at industry events and community functions to enhance its brand visibility and market presence.
Loan Origination and Underwriting
Lead the end-to-end loan origination process for complex CRE transactions, from initial client discussions and deal structuring to final approval and closing. Oversee and conduct thorough due diligence, including in-depth financial analysis of sponsors and guarantors, property-level cash flow modeling, and market analysis. Prepare and present detailed credit memorandums to the loan committee, articulating the strengths, weaknesses, and mitigating factors of each proposed transaction. Ensure all lending activities adhere strictly to the bank’s credit policies and regulatory requirements.
Portfolio Management and Risk Mitigation
Actively manage and monitor a substantial CRE loan portfolio to maintain exceptional asset quality. Proactively identify and address potential credit weaknesses, implementing risk mitigation strategies as necessary. Conduct regular portfolio reviews, site inspections, and client meetings to stay abreast of property performance and market conditions. Manage loan renewals, modifications, and extensions, ensuring timely and accurate risk rating and reporting. Your expertise will be vital in upholding best practices in line with established commercial real estate development standards.
Team Leadership and Mentorship
Provide strong leadership, guidance, and mentorship to a team of relationship managers, underwriters, and portfolio managers. Set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback and coaching, and support the ongoing training and development of your team members. Delegate responsibilities effectively to empower your team while maintaining ultimate accountability for the group’s results.
Market Analysis and Strategy
Maintain an expert-level understanding of the Denver commercial real estate market, including economic trends, supply and demand dynamics, and competitive landscape. Provide strategic insights and recommendations to senior management regarding market opportunities, risk concentrations, and potential adjustments to the bank’s CRE lending strategy. Contribute to the development of new loan products and services to meet the evolving needs of the market.
Requirements for the SVP, Commercial Real Estate with a Regional Bank – Denver, CO
Educational Background
A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Real Estate, Economics, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree (e.g., MS in Real Estate) is highly preferred.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in commercial real estate lending, with at least 5 years in a significant leadership or management capacity. Demonstrable track record of success in originating and underwriting loans in the $10M – $50M+ range.
Market Knowledge
Deep and established knowledge of the Denver, CO commercial real estate market is strongly preferred. Candidates with extensive experience in a comparable major metropolitan market will also be considered. A strong existing network of local contacts is a significant asset.
Credit and Analytical Skills
Expert-level credit analysis and underwriting skills are essential. Must have a proven ability to structure complex CRE transactions across various asset classes (multifamily, industrial, office, retail). Formal credit training from a reputable financial institution is highly desirable.
Leadership and Communication
Exceptional leadership and team management skills with a history of building and developing successful teams. Superior interpersonal, negotiation, and written and verbal communication skills. Technical Proficiency
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is required. Experience with industry-standard financial modeling and CRM software is expected.
