Role Overview for Managing Director, TMT with an Investment Bank – Menlo Park, CA

As the Managing Director of the TMT group, you will serve as the senior-most relationship and execution banker for the sector in the region. You will be responsible for the strategic direction, financial performance, and overall success of the practice. Deal Origination and Business Development

Proactively identify, source, and secure new investment banking mandates within the TMT sector. Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy to target new clients, including established public companies, high-growth private enterprises, and leading financial sponsors. Cultivate and maintain a robust pipeline of opportunities across the full spectrum of investment banking products.

Client Relationship Management

Serve as the primary senior-level contact for a portfolio of key TMT clients. Build and nurture deep, long-term, and trusted advisory relationships with C-suite executives, founders, board members, and investors. Provide insightful, strategic advice on market trends, valuation, capital structure, and corporate development initiatives.

Transaction Execution Leadership

Lead deal teams in the seamless execution of complex transactions. Manage, develop, and mentor a high-performing team of Vice Presidents, Associates, and Analysts. Foster a culture of excellence, integrity, teamwork, and continuous professional growth. Be responsible for team recruitment, training, performance reviews, and career development, ensuring the group is properly staffed and motivated to exceed its goals.

Strategic and Financial Advisory

Act as a true thought partner to clients, delivering sophisticated advice on a wide range of strategic matters. This includes assessing potential acquisitions, evaluating divestiture options, analyzing corporate defense strategies, and providing guidance on optimal capital allocation to maximize shareholder value.

Industry Expertise and Thought Leadership

Maintain and enhance your position as a subject matter expert in the TMT sector. Stay ahead of industry trends, competitive dynamics, and regulatory changes. Represent the firm as a thought leader at industry conferences, panels, and networking events, enhancing the bank’s brand and visibility in the marketplace.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Work collaboratively with partners across other key groups within the firm, including Equity Capital Markets (ECM), Debt Capital Markets (DCM), Leveraged Finance, and Industry Research, to deliver integrated, comprehensive solutions to clients.

P&L Responsibility

Assume full responsibility for the TMT group’s financial performance. Develop annual revenue targets and business plans, manage the group’s budget, and drive profitability for the practice.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive investment banking experience, with at least the last 7-10 years focused specifically on the Technology, Media, and Telecom (TMT) sector. Experience must be from a reputable investment bank or boutique advisory firm.

Proven Track Record

A verifiable and impressive track record of successfully originating and closing a significant volume of M&A and/or capital markets transactions as a lead banker. Candidates must be able to speak to their deal sheet and client relationships in detail.

Extensive Network

A deep, portable, and C-level network of relationships with corporate clients, financial sponsors, venture capitalists, and key influencers within the TMT ecosystem, particularly on the West Coast.

Leadership Acumen

Demonstrated experience in building, leading, and mentoring successful investment banking teams. A history of fostering talent and creating a positive, high-performance work environment.

Technical Proficiency

Superior technical skills in all aspects of corporate finance, including advanced financial modeling, complex valuation methodologies (DCF, LBO, comparable company analysis), deal structuring, and negotiation.

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related quantitative field is required. An MBA from a top-tier business school is strongly preferred.

Regulatory Licenses

Active FINRA Series 7, 63, and 79 licenses are mandatory for this role.
