Key Responsibilities of Head of Gene Therapy R&D
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Define and execute the overall R&D strategy for the gene therapy portfolio, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and long-term vision. Identify and evaluate new therapeutic targets, platforms, and technologies to expand the pipeline.
Scientific & Technical Oversight
Provide expert scientific and technical leadership across all stages of gene therapy R&D, from discovery to preclinical development, IND-enabling studies, and early clinical translation. Oversee experimental design, data interpretation, and decision-making for all research programs.
Pipeline Management
Drive the progression of gene therapy candidates through the discovery and preclinical development phases. Ensure timely execution of key milestones, manage resources effectively, and mitigate scientific and operational risks.
Team Building & Mentorship
Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team of scientists and research associates. Foster a collaborative, innovative, and results-oriented scientific culture, promoting professional growth and scientific excellence.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Work closely with Clinical Development, Regulatory Affairs, Manufacturing (CMC), Business Development, and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless program advancement. Represent R&D in internal strategic discussions and executive leadership meetings.
External Engagement & Partnerships
Establish and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), academic collaborators, and industry partners. Evaluate potential in-licensing opportunities, collaborations, and strategic alliances to augment the R&D pipeline. Present research findings at scientific conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Regulatory Strategy
Contribute to the development of regulatory strategies for gene therapy programs, including IND submissions, and interact with regulatory agencies as required. Ensure all R&D activities adhere to GxP guidelines and relevant regulatory requirements.
Budget & Resource Management
Manage the R&D budget, allocate resources efficiently, and ensure judicious use of financial and personnel resources to achieve scientific and corporate goals.
Intellectual Property
Work with legal counsel to identify, protect, and expand the company’s intellectual property portfolio related to gene therapy technologies and product candidates.
Requirements for the Head of Gene Therapy R&D
Education
Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Genetics, Virology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or a closely related scientific discipline is required.
Experience
- Minimum of 15+ years of progressive experience in biotechnology or pharmaceutical R&D, with at least 8-10 years specifically focused on gene therapy development.
- Significant leadership experience (8+ years) managing and mentoring scientific teams in a fast-paced industry setting, preferably at a Director, Senior Director, or VP level.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully advancing gene therapy programs from discovery through preclinical development to IND submission and early clinical stages.
- Proven experience in strategic planning, budget management, and resource allocation for R&D initiatives.
Technical Expertise
- Deep scientific understanding and hands-on experience with various gene therapy modalities, including AAV, lentiviral vectors, non-viral delivery systems, and gene editing technologies (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9).
- Strong knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, virology, immunology, and genetics relevant to gene therapy.
- Experience with preclinical models of human disease, biomarker discovery, and translational research.
- Familiarity with CMC considerations for gene therapy products, including vector manufacturing, analytics, and quality control.
- Understanding of the regulatory landscape for gene therapies and experience interacting with regulatory authorities (e.g., FDA, EMA).
