Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and working in close collaboration with the executive leadership team, the Head of Corporate Strategy will oversee all facets of the strategic planning process. This includes conducting in-depth market analysis, evaluating competitive threats and opportunities, spearheading mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and fostering a culture of forward-thinking innovation across the enterprise.

You will be tasked with translating high-level strategic vision into tangible, actionable plans that align with the company’s financial goals and operational capabilities. Your insights and recommendations will directly influence board-level decisions and guide the allocation of critical resources. Key Responsibilities of Head of Corporate Strategy with a large Insurer – San Antonio, TX

Strategic Planning & Development

Lead the end-to-end annual and multi-year strategic planning cycle for the entire organization. Facilitate executive off-sites and workshops to define and refine the corporate vision, mission, and strategic priorities. Develop a comprehensive strategic roadmap that outlines key initiatives, timelines, and resource requirements.

Market and Competitive Intelligence

Establish and lead a robust intelligence function to continuously monitor and analyze emerging insurance industry trends, technological advancements (Insurtech), regulatory changes, and competitor strategies. Synthesize complex information into actionable insights and strategic recommendations for the executive team and Board of Directors.

Mergers, Acquisitions & Corporate Development

Drive the corporate development agenda by identifying, evaluating, and executing strategic acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, and partnerships. You will lead the entire M&A lifecycle, from target identification and strategic rationale development to due diligence, valuation, negotiation, and post-merger integration planning.

Business Portfolio Management

Continuously assess the company’s portfolio of businesses, products, and services. Provide data-driven recommendations on where to invest, divest, or optimize to maximize long-term shareholder value and competitive advantage.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Act as a key strategic partner to business unit leaders, helping them develop and align their individual strategies with the overarching corporate goals. Foster strong relationships across the organization, including Finance, Technology, Operations, and Marketing, to ensure seamless execution of strategic initiatives.

Performance Measurement & Management

In partnership with the CFO, develop a framework of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and metrics to track the progress and success of strategic initiatives. Prepare and deliver compelling presentations and reports on strategic performance to senior leadership and the board.

Innovation and Growth Initiatives

Champion innovation by identifying and incubating new business models, market entry strategies, and disruptive technologies. Explore white-space opportunities that can create new revenue streams and enhance the company’s market leadership position.

Team Leadership

Recruit, develop, and mentor a high-performing team of strategy professionals. Foster a collaborative, results-oriented culture that encourages intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and excellence in execution.

Requirements for the Head of Corporate Strategy with a large Insurer – San Antonio, TX

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree from a top-tier academic institution is strongly preferred.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in corporate strategy, management consulting, investment banking, or corporate development. A significant portion of this experience must be within or serving the insurance sector (P&C, Life & Annuity, or Health).

M&A Expertise

Demonstrated, hands-on experience leading multiple M&A transactions through the full deal lifecycle. Must possess strong financial modeling, valuation, and due diligence skills.

Leadership Acumen

Proven track record of building and leading high-caliber teams. Must exhibit exceptional executive presence and the ability to influence and align stakeholders at all levels, including C-suite executives and board members.

Strategic & Analytical Skills

Superior strategic thinking capabilities with the ability to synthesize complex and ambiguous information into clear, concise strategies. Exceptional quantitative and qualitative analytical skills are a must.

Industry Knowledge

Deep understanding of the insurance value chain, key industry drivers, regulatory environment, and competitive landscape. Familiarity with Insurtech and digital transformation within financial services is highly desirable.

Communication Skills

World-class written and verbal communication skills. The ability to craft and deliver persuasive, data-driven narratives to a variety of audiences is critical for success in this role.
