Key Responsibilities of Director of Privacy (Legal) (Remote)

Global Privacy Program Leadership

Design, implement, and continuously enhance a robust, scalable, and effective global data privacy program that aligns with business objectives and regulatory requirements. This includes developing policies, procedures, and controls for data collection, use, storage, sharing, and disposal.

Regulatory Compliance & Guidance

Provide expert legal advice and strategic guidance on a broad spectrum of international data protection regulations, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, LGPD, PIPEDA, and other relevant privacy laws. Monitor regulatory developments and trends, assessing their impact on the organization and proactively recommending necessary adjustments to policies and practices.

Privacy-by-Design & DPIAs

Embed privacy-by-design principles into all new products, services, and technological initiatives. Lead and oversee Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs) and Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) for high-risk processing activities, ensuring identified risks are mitigated effectively.

Data Subject Rights Management

Develop and manage processes for responding to data subject access requests (DSARs), deletion requests, and other privacy-related inquiries in a timely and compliant manner.

Incident Response & Breach Management

Lead the legal response to potential data privacy incidents and breaches, working closely with information security, IT, and communications teams. Ensure compliance with all breach notification requirements and conduct post-incident reviews to enhance resilience.

Vendor & Third-Party Risk Management

Develop and implement a comprehensive third-party privacy risk management program. Review and negotiate data processing agreements (DPAs), standard contractual clauses (SCCs), and other privacy-related terms with vendors, partners, and customers. Conduct privacy due diligence for M&A activities.

Policy Development & Enforcement

Draft, review, and update internal and external privacy policies, terms of service, consent forms, and other privacy-related documentation to ensure accuracy, clarity, and legal compliance.

Training & Awareness

Develop and deliver engaging and effective privacy training programs for employees at all levels of the organization, fostering a strong culture of privacy awareness and compliance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Act as a trusted advisor to various departments, including IT, security, product development, marketing, HR, and sales, providing practical and actionable privacy advice that supports business innovation while managing legal risk.

Audit & Assurance

Support internal and external privacy audits, assessments, and certifications. Identify areas for improvement and drive corrective actions to strengthen the privacy program.

Strategic Advisory

Contribute to the organization’s overall risk management strategy, identifying emerging privacy risks and developing proactive mitigation plans. Advise senior leadership on the strategic implications of privacy issues.

Technology & Tools

Evaluate and recommend privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) and privacy management tools to optimize program efficiency and effectiveness.

Requirements for the Director of Privacy (Legal) (Remote)

Education

Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school is required.

Bar Membership

Active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. State Bar.

Experience

A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive legal experience, with at least 7-8 years specifically focused on data privacy law, either in-house at a multinational corporation or at a top-tier law firm specializing in privacy and data security.

Expertise in Global Regulations

Demonstrable expert-level knowledge of major global data protection laws and frameworks, including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, LGPD, PIPEDA, CCPA, and ePrivacy Directive. Experience with sector-specific privacy regulations is a significant plus.

Certifications

Industry-recognized privacy certifications such as CIPP/US, CIPP/E, CIPM, CIPT, or FIP are highly preferred.

Leadership & Management

Proven experience in a leadership role, with the ability to build, mentor, and lead a team (even if initially a team of one, with potential for future growth). Strong project management skills are essential.
