Key Responsibilities of Director of Precision Machining
The Director of Precision Machining will be responsible for a comprehensive set of duties, ensuring the highest standards of operational efficiency, quality, and innovation. Your strategic vision and hands-on leadership will be critical in achieving these objectives:
Strategic Vision & Execution
- Develop and implement a long-term strategic roadmap for precision machining operations, aligning with overall business objectives and market demands. This includes identifying future technological needs, capacity planning, and capital expenditure justifications for new equipment and automation.
- Drive initiatives for process optimization, cost reduction, and lead time improvement across all machining centers. Implement Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies to eliminate waste and enhance efficiency.
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscapes in precision manufacturing. Evaluate and recommend the adoption of new materials, machining techniques, and software solutions to maintain a competitive advantage.
Operational Leadership & Efficiency
- Oversee the daily operations of multiple precision machining departments, ensuring seamless production flow, adherence to schedules, and optimal utilization of resources.
- Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for productivity, quality, cost, and delivery. Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives based on performance data.
- Champion a culture of operational excellence, emphasizing safety, quality, and efficiency in every aspect of the machining process.
- Manage the maintenance and calibration of all precision machining equipment, including CNC machines, EDM, grinding equipment, and metrology instruments, to ensure peak performance and reliability.
Team Development & Culture
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineers, machinists, technicians, and supervisors. Foster an environment of collaboration, accountability, and continuous professional growth.
- Conduct performance reviews, set clear objectives, and provide regular feedback to direct reports. Identify training needs and facilitate professional development opportunities for the entire team.
- Recruit and onboard top talent, ensuring the precision machining department is staffed with skilled and motivated professionals capable of meeting current and future business demands.
- Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring all team members adhere to safety protocols, use appropriate PPE, and participate in regular safety training.
Quality & Compliance
- Establish and enforce rigorous quality control standards and procedures for all machined components. Ensure compliance with industry standards such as ISO 9001, AS9100, and customer-specific requirements.
- Implement advanced metrology techniques and equipment to verify part dimensions, surface finishes, and geometric tolerances. Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for any non-conformances.
- Collaborate closely with quality assurance and engineering teams to implement Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles, ensuring designs are optimized for precision machining and cost-effectiveness.
Technology & Innovation
- Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of cutting-edge machining technologies, including advanced CNC controls, robotic automation, additive manufacturing integration, and smart factory solutions.
- Drive research and development efforts related to novel machining processes, tooling materials, and cutting strategies to achieve higher precision, faster cycle times, and reduced costs.
- Foster a culture of innovation within the team, encouraging experimentation and continuous learning regarding new advanced manufacturing technologies and methodologies.
Financial Stewardship
- Develop and manage the annual operating budget and capital expenditure budget for the precision machining department. Monitor spending, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure financial targets are met.
- Analyze production costs, scrap rates, and rework expenses to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to enhance profitability.
- Provide regular reports on departmental performance, financial results, and strategic initiatives to senior leadership.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with engineering, product development, supply chain, and sales teams to ensure alignment on project requirements, production schedules, and customer expectations.
- Manage relationships with key suppliers of raw materials, tooling, and machining equipment, negotiating favorable terms and ensuring high-quality inputs.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for precision machining during customer interactions, technical reviews, and new product introduction processes.
Safety & Environmental Responsibility
- Ensure all precision machining operations comply with relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations. Implement best practices to minimize risks and promote a safe working environment.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans and conduct regular safety audits and drills.
Requirements for the Director of Precision Machining

Education
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution is required. A Master’s degree (M.S. or MBA) is highly preferred and will be a significant advantage.
Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in precision machining environments, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership or directorial role overseeing complex machining operations. Experience in industries requiring ultra-high precision (e.g., aerospace, medical, defense, semiconductor) is highly desirable.
Technical Expertise
- Profound knowledge of various precision machining processes, including multi-axis CNC milling and turning, EDM (Wire & Sinker), surface grinding, jig grinding, and honing.
- Expertise in CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Mastercam, NX) for design, programming, and simulation.
- Deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles and their application in manufacturing and inspection.
- Strong comprehension of materials science, including machining characteristics of various metals (e.g., stainless steels, aluminum alloys, titanium, superalloys) and advanced composites.
- Familiarity with metrology and inspection equipment, including CMMs, optical comparators, profilometers, and other precision measurement tools.
- Experience with DFM/DFA principles and their implementation in product development cycles.
Leadership & Management Skills
- Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop large, diverse teams of engineers and skilled tradespeople.
- Exceptional strategic planning and execution skills, with the ability to translate business goals into operational strategies.
- Strong project management capabilities, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation for complex projects.

Business Acumen
- Solid understanding of P&L management, cost accounting, and financial analysis within a manufacturing context.
- Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies (Certification preferred).
