Key Responsibilities of Director of Operations (Plastics)
- Strategic Planning & Execution: Develop, implement, and monitor operational strategies that align with the company’s overall business objectives. Translate strategic goals into actionable plans for production, supply chain, quality, and safety, ensuring efficient resource allocation and measurable outcomes.
- P&L Management & Financial Oversight: Assume full accountability for the operational budget, including cost control, forecasting, and capital expenditure planning. Identify and implement cost reduction initiatives while maintaining product quality and operational efficiency. Drive profitability through effective resource management and waste reduction strategies.
- Production Optimization & Efficiency: Oversee all manufacturing processes, including various plastics processing technologies such as injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, and compounding. Implement and champion Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies to enhance productivity, reduce cycle times, and minimize defects. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and drive root cause analysis for deviations.
- Supply Chain & Inventory Management: Lead efforts in optimizing the end-to-end supply chain, from raw material procurement (resins, additives, colorants) to finished goods distribution. Develop robust inventory control systems to ensure material availability while minimizing carrying costs. Collaborate with suppliers to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery of materials.
- Quality Assurance & Control: Establish and maintain rigorous quality management systems (QMS) to ensure all products meet or exceed customer specifications and industry standards. Drive a culture of quality throughout the organization, implementing preventative measures and continuous improvement initiatives to reduce scrap and rework.
- Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Leadership: Foster a proactive and robust safety culture, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal EHS regulations. Develop and implement safety programs, conduct regular risk assessments, and promote a safe working environment for all employees. Champion sustainable manufacturing practices and waste reduction.
- Team Leadership & Development: Recruit, mentor, train, and develop a high-performing operations team, including production managers, supervisors, and technical staff. Foster a collaborative and engaging work environment that encourages professional growth, accountability, and innovation. Conduct performance reviews and implement development plans.
- Technology & Innovation Integration: Evaluate, recommend, and implement new manufacturing technologies, automation solutions, and process improvements to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality. - Capital Project Management: Oversee the planning, execution, and successful completion of capital expenditure projects related to equipment upgrades, facility expansions, and new technology installations. Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and achieve desired operational improvements.
- Customer Satisfaction & Relationship Management: Collaborate closely with sales, marketing, and R&D teams to ensure operational capabilities support customer demand, product innovation, and delivery schedules. Address customer concerns related to product quality or delivery efficiently and effectively.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all manufacturing operations comply with relevant industry regulations and standards, which may include FDA regulations for medical plastics, automotive industry standards (e.g., IATF 16949), or other sector-specific requirements.
Requirements for the Director of Operations (Plastics)
- Extensive Industry Experience: A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in operations management, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (Director or equivalent) specifically within the plastics manufacturing industry. Candidates must demonstrate a deep understanding of various plastics processing technologies.
- Plastics Processing Expertise: In-depth technical knowledge and hands-on experience with key plastics manufacturing processes such as injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, compounding, and finishing operations. Familiarity with different resin types and their properties is essential.
- Financial Acumen: Proven track record of managing significant operational budgets, P&L responsibility, and implementing successful cost reduction and profitability improvement initiatives. Strong analytical skills to interpret financial data and make data-driven decisions.
- Leadership & Team Development: Demonstrated ability to build, lead, motivate, and develop high-performing multi-functional teams. Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Process Improvement Methodologies: Strong practical experience and certification (preferred) in Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or other continuous improvement methodologies. A relentless drive for operational excellence and efficiency.
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Plastics, Mechanical, Chemical, Industrial), Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related technical field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA or MS) is highly preferred.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficient in ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), manufacturing execution systems (MES), production planning software, and advanced data analysis tools. Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Problem-Solving & Decision Making: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound, timely decisions under pressure. Strategic thinker capable of anticipating challenges and developing proactive solutions.
