Role Overview for Director of Logistics & Distribution with a CPG Co. – Cincinnati, OH
The Director of Logistics & Distribution is a senior leadership position responsible for the strategic oversight and tactical execution of all aspects of the company’s logistics and distribution network. This includes transportation, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment, and third-party logistics (3PL) provider management. Reporting to the Vice President of Supply Chain, you will develop and implement a comprehensive strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives, focusing on improving service levels, reducing costs, and enhancing operational efficiency. You will be a key cross-functional partner, collaborating closely with Manufacturing, Sales, Procurement, and Finance to ensure a cohesive and responsive supply chain. Key Responsibilities of Director of Logistics & Distribution with a CPG Co. – Cincinnati, OH
Strategic Network Leadership
Develop, implement, and continuously refine the long-term logistics and distribution network strategy. This includes network modeling, capacity planning, and identifying optimal locations for distribution centers to support market expansion and evolving customer demands.
Warehouse & Distribution Operations
Provide executive oversight for a multi-site network of company-owned and 3PL-managed distribution centers. Establish and enforce best-in-class operational standards for receiving, storage, inventory control, order picking, packing, and shipping to ensure the highest levels of accuracy and productivity.
Transportation Management
Direct all inbound and outbound transportation activities, including carrier selection, contract negotiation, and performance management across all modes (FTL, LTL, Parcel, Intermodal). Implement strategies to optimize routes, reduce freight costs, and improve on-time delivery performance.
Financial & Budgetary Oversight
Develop and manage the annual logistics and distribution budget, including warehousing, freight, and labor costs. Conduct variance analysis, provide accurate forecasting, and identify and execute significant cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality.
Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Management
Lead the selection, onboarding, and strategic management of all 3PL partners. Establish rigorous Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and conduct regular Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs) to drive performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Team Development & Mentorship
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of logistics professionals. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and accountability. Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, and create development plans to support career growth within the organization.
Inventory Management & Control
In partnership with the planning team, implement strategies to optimize inventory levels across the network. Ensure robust cycle counting programs and physical inventory procedures are in place to maintain the highest degree of inventory accuracy and minimize loss.
Technology & Systems Enhancement
Champion the evaluation and implementation of new logistics technologies, including Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and advanced analytics platforms. Leverage technology to enhance visibility, automate processes, and improve decision-making.
Continuous Improvement & Process Excellence
Drive a culture of continuous improvement by championing Lean, Six Sigma, or similar methodologies. Identify and eliminate waste, streamline workflows, and enhance operational processes throughout the logistics network.
Regulatory Compliance & Safety
Ensure all logistics and distribution operations are in full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA). Uphold the highest standards of safety and security across all facilities.
Requirements for the Director of Logistics & Distribution with a CPG Co. – Cincinnati, OH
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in logistics, distribution, and supply chain management, with at least 7 years in a significant leadership role managing large, complex operations.
Industry Expertise
Deep experience within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), Food & Beverage, or a related fast-moving consumer goods industry is essential. Must have a thorough understanding of the unique challenges of CPG distribution, including managing relationships with major retail customers.
Network Management
Proven track record of managing a national, multi-site distribution network, including both company-operated facilities and 3PL partners.
Financial Acumen
Strong P&L management experience with a demonstrated ability to develop and manage multi-million dollar budgets and deliver significant cost savings.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership and people management skills with the proven ability to build, inspire, and motivate high-performing teams. A true player-coach who can operate at both strategic and tactical levels.
Analytical & Strategic Mindset
Superior analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills. Must be able to translate complex data into actionable strategic insights and operational plans.
Technical Proficiency
Advanced proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and extensive hands-on experience with modern WMS and TMS platforms.
Industry Knowledge
Must stay abreast of the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices as defined by leading organizations like the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).
Communication & Negotiation
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to executive audiences. Strong negotiation skills for carrier and 3PL contracts are a must.
