The Director of Enterprise Architecture will be a key member of the IT leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). This individual will be responsible for the overall vision, strategy, principles, and governance of the enterprise technology landscape. You will lead the charge in translating the healthcare system’s strategic objectives—such as improving patient engagement, advancing population health initiatives, and optimizing clinical workflows—into a cohesive and forward-looking technology roadmap. Key Responsibilities of Director, Enterprise Architecture with a Healthcare System – Baltimore, MD
Strategic Roadmap Development
Develop, maintain, and socialize the enterprise architecture (EA) vision and multi-year roadmap. Conduct comprehensive assessments of the current technology landscape to identify gaps, redundancies, and opportunities for modernization. Ensure the EA roadmap is in lockstep with the healthcare system’s long-term clinical and business goals.
Architecture Governance & Standards
Establish and chair the Architecture Review Board (ARB) to provide oversight and governance for all new technology solutions and significant system changes. Define and enforce EA principles, standards, patterns, and policies to ensure consistency, reduce complexity, and manage technical debt across the organization.
Solution Design & Oversight
Provide leadership and guidance to solution architects in the design of complex, end-to-end solutions. Ensure that architectural designs for clinical systems (EHR/EMR), business applications, data platforms, and infrastructure meet stringent requirements for security, performance, scalability, and compliance.
Technology Innovation & Evaluation
Act as the primary thought leader on emerging technologies and their potential application in a healthcare context. Proactively research, evaluate, and recommend technologies such as cloud computing (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS), artificial intelligence/machine learning, IoT for remote patient monitoring, and data analytics platforms to drive innovation and create a competitive advantage.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Build and maintain strong relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including C-level executives, the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO), clinical department heads, and IT leaders across infrastructure, applications, and security. Serve as the key liaison who translates complex technical concepts into business value.
Data Architecture Strategy
In collaboration with the data and analytics teams, define the enterprise data architecture strategy. This includes data modeling, data integration (HL7, FHIR), data warehousing, and the development of a unified data platform to support clinical decision support, research, and population health management initiatives.
Security & Compliance by Design
Champion a ‘security-by-design’ philosophy. Ensure that all architectural blueprints and solutions inherently embed robust security controls and are fully compliant with healthcare regulations, including HIPAA, HITECH, and other data privacy and protection standards.
Team Leadership & Mentorship
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of enterprise and solution architects. Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous learning, and architectural excellence. Set clear goals, provide regular feedback, and manage the professional development of your team members.
Financial & Vendor Management
Contribute to the IT budgeting and strategic planning process. Manage the enterprise architecture budget effectively and oversee key relationships with technology vendors and strategic partners, ensuring value and alignment with architectural standards.
Requirements for the Director, Enterprise Architecture with a Healthcare System – Baltimore, MD
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in Information Technology, with at least 7 years in a senior architecture role (e.g., Enterprise Architect, Principal Architect) and 3-5 years in a formal leadership capacity managing other architects.
Mandatory Healthcare Industry Experience
Demonstrable, in-depth experience working within a large hospital, integrated delivery network (IDN), or academic medical center is essential. Deep understanding of clinical workflows, healthcare data, and major clinical information systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner) is required.
Architectural Framework Expertise
Proven experience in the practical application of architecture frameworks and methodologies. Deep knowledge of one or more formal frameworks such as TOGAF, Zachman, or FEA is critical to success in this role.
Broad Technical Acumen
Comprehensive knowledge across multiple technology domains, including cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), modern application architecture (microservices, APIs), data architecture (SQL, NoSQL, data lakes), network design, and cybersecurity principles (NIST framework).
Interoperability Standards
Strong working knowledge of critical healthcare interoperability standards, including HL7 V2/V3, CDA, and particularly FHIR, is mandatory.
Leadership & Communication Skills
Exceptional leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills are paramount. Must possess the ability to influence and negotiate with senior executives, clinicians, and technical teams. Proven ability to articulate a clear, compelling vision and drive organizational change.
Certifications (Preferred)
Professional certifications such as TOGAF 9 Certified, Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS), or certified cloud architect credentials (AWS/Azure) are highly desirable.
