Key Responsibilities of Chief Scientific Officer – Philadelphia, PA
Strategic R&D Leadership
Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive, long-range R&D strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives, market opportunities, and financial goals. Drive the technological vision and product roadmap.
Pipeline Management
Oversee the entire product development pipeline, from early-stage research and concept generation to late-stage development, clinical evaluation, and lifecycle management. Implement robust stage-gate processes to ensure projects meet key milestones, budgets, and quality standards.
Team Development & Mentorship

Innovation and Technology Scouting

Intellectual Property Strategy

Regulatory & Quality Compliance
Provide scientific leadership and support for regulatory submissions to global authorities, including the FDA and international bodies. Ensure all R&D activities are conducted in strict compliance with relevant quality systems and standards, such as ISO 13485 and FDA QSR.
Budget & Resource Management
Develop and manage the annual R&D budget, ensuring optimal allocation of capital, resources, and personnel to high-priority projects. Drive operational efficiency within the R&D organization.
External Collaboration & Alliances
Identify and cultivate strategic partnerships with academic institutions, key opinion leaders (KOLs), contract research organizations (CROs), and other technology companies to augment internal capabilities and accelerate innovation.
Executive Leadership & Communication
Serve as a key member of the executive team, contributing to overall corporate strategy. Effectively communicate the company’s scientific vision, R&D progress, and technological advancements to the Board of Directors, investors, partners, and the broader scientific community.
Scientific & Technical Oversight
Provide expert scientific and technical guidance across the organization. Serve as the final authority on technical decision-making for product development programs, ensuring scientific integrity and rigor in all R&D outputs.
Requirements for the Chief Scientific Officer – Philadelphia, PA
Educational Background
An advanced degree (Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D.) in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Molecular Biology, Medicine) is required.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the medical device industry, with at least 10 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., VP of R&D, Senior Director) with significant strategic, budgetary, and personnel management responsibilities.
Proven Product Development Track Record
Demonstrated success in leading teams to develop and commercialize multiple medical devices, from concept through market launch. Experience with both Class II and Class III devices is highly desirable.
Regulatory Acumen
Deep understanding of the global regulatory landscape for medical devices. Must have extensive experience with FDA regulatory pathways (510(k), De Novo, PMA) and a comprehensive knowledge of design controls, risk management (ISO 14971), and quality management systems (ISO 13485). A strong grasp of medical device innovation and its regulatory implications is critical.
Strategic Vision
Proven ability to think strategically, anticipate future trends, and translate them into a coherent R&D and product strategy. Must be able to balance short-term execution with long-term vision.
Leadership & Team Building
Exceptional leadership skills with a proven ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a high-performing, multi-disciplinary R&D team. Experience scaling an R&D organization is a significant plus.
Intellectual Property Expertise
Solid experience in developing and executing IP strategies, including patent prosecution and portfolio management, to protect innovations and secure market position.
