Key Responsibilities of Chief Scientific Officer – Los Angeles, CA

Strategic Scientific Leadership

Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive scientific and technological roadmap that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Identify and evaluate emerging technologies, scientific trends, and potential external innovation opportunities (e.g., M&A, licensing, partnerships) to maintain a competitive advantage.

R&D and Product Pipeline Oversight

Direct all aspects of the research and development lifecycle, from initial ideation and feasibility studies through to product design, verification, validation, and transfer to manufacturing. Ensure the product pipeline is robust, innovative, and positioned for long-term commercial success.

Team Development and Mentorship

Build, lead, and inspire a high-performing R&D organization. Recruit top-tier talent and foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement. Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for team members at all levels.

Regulatory and Quality Compliance

Ensure all R&D activities are conducted in strict compliance with global regulatory standards. You will be responsible for a deep understanding and application of FDA regulations for medical devices, ISO 13485, and other relevant international requirements. Collaborate closely with Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance teams to support successful product submissions and maintain a state of audit-readiness.

Intellectual Property Strategy

Spearhead the company’s intellectual property (IP) strategy. Oversee the process of patent filing, portfolio management, and freedom-to-operate analyses to create a powerful and defensible IP portfolio that protects the company’s innovations.

Budget and Resource Management

Develop and manage the annual R&D budget, ensuring optimal allocation of financial and human resources to achieve strategic goals. Implement metrics and KPIs to track project progress, productivity, and ROI.

External Collaboration and Communication

Act as the company’s lead scientific ambassador. Establish and cultivate strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), academic institutions, clinical research organizations, and strategic partners. Represent the company at scientific conferences, investor meetings, and industry events.

Clinical Strategy Partnership

Work in close collaboration with the Clinical Affairs team to guide the design and execution of pre-clinical and clinical studies. Ensure that trial designs are scientifically sound and will generate the robust data required for regulatory approval and market adoption.

Executive Team Contribution

Provide critical scientific and technical insights to the Board of Directors and executive leadership team. Play an active role in corporate strategy, business development discussions, and long-range planning.

Requirements for the Chief Scientific Officer – Los Angeles, CA

Educational Background

An advanced degree (Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D.) in a relevant life sciences or engineering field, such as Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, Molecular Biology, or Medicine, is required.

Executive Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience within the medical device industry, including at least 8-10 years in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., VP of R&D, Senior Director of Engineering, CTO) with significant strategic and operational responsibilities.

Proven Commercialization Track Record

Demonstrable success in leading the development and launch of multiple complex medical devices (Class II or Class III) from concept to market. Experience with both hardware and software-driven devices is highly desirable.

Regulatory Acumen

Deep, hands-on experience navigating the global regulatory landscape, including successful 510(k) and/or PMA submissions with the FDA. Familiarity with CE Marking and other international regulatory processes is essential.

Leadership and Management Skills

Exceptional leadership presence with the proven ability to build, scale, and manage high-performing, cross-functional technical teams. A track record of mentoring future leaders is a must.

Technical and Scientific Depth

Broad and deep technical expertise across relevant disciplines. Must be able to engage in highly technical discussions with subject matter experts while also being able to communicate complex concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Business and Financial Acumen

Strong understanding of the business side of R&D, including budget management, financial modeling, market analysis, and strategic planning. Experience in a venture-backed or high-growth public company environment is a plus.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Impeccable written and verbal communication skills. Must be a compelling presenter, a skilled negotiator, and a collaborative partner who can build consensus and influence across the organization.
