Key Responsibilities of Chief People Officer with a Growing Biopharma Company – Cambridge, MA

The Chief People Officer will have a broad and impactful remit, overseeing all aspects of the human resources and people operations. Key responsibilities include:

Executive Leadership & Strategic Partnership

Serve as a vital member of the executive leadership team, contributing to overall company strategy, long-range planning, and critical business decisions. Act as a trusted advisor and coach to the CEO, board of directors, and fellow executives on all people-related matters, including organizational design, leadership development, and succession planning.

Culture and Employee Engagement

Act as the primary champion and architect of the company’s culture. Talent Acquisition Strategy

Design and lead a sophisticated, proactive talent acquisition function capable of attracting top-tier scientific, clinical, technical, and corporate talent in the highly competitive Cambridge biopharma market. Develop innovative sourcing strategies, build a strong employer brand, and ensure an exceptional candidate experience from first contact to onboarding.

Organizational Design & Scalability

Partner with leadership to design and evolve the organizational structure to support rapid growth and changing business needs. Lead change management initiatives effectively, ensuring clear communication and employee buy-in during periods of transition.

Talent Management & Leadership Development

Create and implement a comprehensive talent management framework, including robust performance management processes, career pathing, and high-potential employee identification. Develop and oversee leadership development programs that cultivate the skills and capabilities needed for future success.

Total Rewards & Compensation

Develop and manage a competitive total rewards strategy that aligns with the company’s stage and philosophy. This includes overseeing executive and broad-based compensation, annual salary reviews, bonus programs, and long-term equity/incentive plans that attract, motivate, and retain top talent.

HR Operations & Compliance

Ensure the HR function operates with excellence and efficiency. Oversee the selection and management of HRIS, payroll, and other people-related systems. Ensure full compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, mitigating risk for the organization.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I)

Lead the development and execution of a meaningful DE&I strategy that is woven into the fabric of the organization. Foster an equitable and inclusive workplace where all employees feel a sense of belonging and have the opportunity to thrive.

Requirements for the Chief People Officer with a Growing Biopharma Company – Cambridge, MA

The ideal candidate will be a proven HR leader with deep experience in the life sciences industry and a passion for building great companies. Specific qualifications include:

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree is required. A Master’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration (MBA), Organizational Development, or a related field is strongly preferred.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15+ years of progressive experience in Human Resources, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., Vice President of HR, Head of People, CPO) overseeing the entire HR function.

Industry Expertise

Significant experience within the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industry is mandatory. The candidate must understand the unique talent challenges and cultural dynamics of a science-driven organization.

Leadership & Influence

Functional Expertise

Deep, hands-on expertise across all HR disciplines, including talent acquisition, compensation and benefits (including equity design), employee relations, organizational development, and compliance.
