Role Overview for Chief Financial Officer – Minneapolis, MN

The Chief Financial Officer will be a cornerstone of the executive leadership team, reporting directly to the CEO. This individual will be responsible for the entire spectrum of financial management, from strategic financial planning and capital allocation to hands-on operational accounting and control. As a strategic business partner, the CFO will provide critical financial insights, analysis, and guidance to support high-stakes decision-making across the organization.

Key Responsibilities of Chief Financial Officer – Minneapolis, MN

Strategic Financial Leadership & Planning

Act as a strategic partner to the CEO and executive team, providing financial leadership, counsel, and analysis on all strategic issues. Lead the development of the company’s long-range financial plans, annual budgets, and rolling forecasts to support strategic goals.

Capital Strategy & Investor Relations

Develop and execute a sophisticated capital allocation strategy. Lead all capital-raising efforts, including equity and debt financing, to support the company’s growth. Cultivate and manage relationships with investors, lenders, and the broader financial community. Prepare board and investor presentations, articulating the company’s financial narrative and performance.

Financial Operations & Control

Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, A/P, A/R, payroll, and financial reporting. Ensure the timely and accurate closing of financial periods and the preparation of internal and external financial statements in accordance with US GAAP. Implement and maintain a robust system of internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.

FP&A and Business Intelligence

Lead the Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) function to provide insightful analysis of business performance, including variance analysis, KPI tracking, and profitability analysis by product and market. Develop sophisticated financial models to support strategic initiatives, new product launches, and other investment decisions.

SEC Reporting & Compliance

For a company on a public-track, establish and manage all public company reporting requirements. This includes having a deep understanding of SEC reporting and compliance standards, managing the preparation of 10-Ks, 10-Qs, and other filings, and ensuring adherence to Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) controls.

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)

Play a leading role in identifying, evaluating, and executing potential M&A opportunities. Lead the financial due diligence process, develop valuation models, and oversee the financial integration of acquired businesses to ensure strategic and financial objectives are met.

Treasury and Cash Management

Direct treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and investment of corporate funds. Optimize the company’s capital structure and manage banking relationships effectively.

Team Leadership & Development

Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performance finance and accounting organization. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented culture that empowers team members and supports professional growth.

Systems & Process Improvement

Evaluate and scale the company’s financial systems, infrastructure, and processes to support significant growth. Drive initiatives to leverage technology for increased efficiency, improved data analytics, and enhanced financial controls.

Requirements for the Chief Financial Officer – Minneapolis, MN

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Economics is required. An MBA from a top-tier institution and/or a CPA designation is strongly preferred.

Executive Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive financial experience, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role (CFO, VP of Finance, or equivalent) within a complex, high-growth organization.

Industry Expertise

Significant and demonstrable experience within the medical device, biotechnology, or a related healthcare/life sciences industry is mandatory. A deep understanding of the unique financial, operational, and regulatory challenges of this sector is critical.

Capital Markets & M&A

A proven track record of success in raising capital (both private and public) and leading M&A transactions from diligence to integration. Must possess strong relationships within the investment banking and private equity communities.

Public Company Acumen

Substantial experience operating in a public company environment or leading a company through an IPO process is highly desirable. Expertise in SEC regulations, SOX compliance, and investor relations is essential.

Technical Proficiency

Expert-level knowledge of US GAAP, financial modeling, and data analysis. Hands-on experience with modern ERP systems and business intelligence tools.

Leadership Qualities

Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills. A hands-on leader with a high level of integrity, intellectual curiosity, and a strong executive presence. Must possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, capable of effectively presenting complex financial information to a variety of audiences.
