As the Chief Commercial Officer, you will be a cornerstone of the executive leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer. You will be the principal architect of the company’s global commercial strategy and will be responsible for building a world-class commercial organization from the ground up. Key Responsibilities of Chief Commercial Officer with an Oncology Biotech – San Diego, CA
The Chief Commercial Officer will have a broad and impactful remit, responsible for designing and executing the company’s end-to-end commercial vision. Key responsibilities include:
Global Commercial Strategy
Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive long-range global commercial strategy for the company’s entire portfolio. This includes conducting in-depth market analysis, competitive intelligence, and landscape assessments to inform product positioning, lifecycle management, and go-to-market strategies.
Launch Excellence
Spearhead all pre-launch, launch, and post-launch commercial activities for the company’s lead oncology assets. Build and execute flawless launch plans for the US, EU, and other key international markets, ensuring market readiness and rapid uptake.
Organizational Leadership
Recruit, develop, and lead a high-performing, fully integrated commercial organization. This includes building out functions such as marketing, sales, market access, commercial operations, and analytics. Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and patient-centricity.
Marketing and Brand Management
Oversee the development and execution of global brand strategies, product positioning, and messaging. Direct all marketing initiatives, including digital marketing, congress strategy, and promotional material development, to effectively communicate the value proposition to all stakeholders.
Market Access and Reimbursement
Design and implement innovative market access strategies to secure optimal pricing, reimbursement, and patient access across global markets. Build strong relationships with payers, health authorities, and policy makers.
Sales Force Development
If and when required, build, train, and deploy a specialized oncology sales force. Establish sales targets, incentive compensation plans, and performance metrics to drive revenue growth and market share.
Commercial Operations and Analytics
Establish a robust commercial operations function to support the commercial team. Implement systems and processes for sales forecasting, data analytics, market research, and CRM to drive data-driven decision-making.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as the commercial voice on the executive team and in cross-functional development teams. Provide critical commercial input into clinical trial design, target product profiles, and lifecycle management planning to maximize the long-term value of assets.
Financial Stewardship
Develop and manage the commercial budget, including long-range financial planning, revenue forecasting, and P&L management. Ensure responsible allocation of resources to maximize return on investment.
External Stakeholder Engagement
Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), physician networks, patient advocacy groups, and other external stakeholders to build product champions and gather critical market insights.
Requirements for the Chief Commercial Officer with an Oncology Biotech – San Diego, CA
The successful candidate will be a results-oriented leader with extensive experience and a deep passion for oncology. The qualifications and experience required for this critical role are:
Educational Background
An advanced degree (MBA, PhD, PharmD, or MD) is strongly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business, or a related field is required.
Professional Experience
- A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive commercial leadership experience within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with a demonstrable trajectory of increasing responsibility and impact.
- Extensive and recent experience in the oncology therapeutic area is mandatory. Experience with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies, or targeted therapies is highly desirable.
- A proven and verifiable track record of successfully leading the launch of one or more major oncology products in the United States. Experience with global launches, particularly in the EU, is a significant plus.
- Experience building a commercial function from an early stage or in a small, fast-growing biotech environment is highly preferred. The ability to be both strategic and hands-on is essential.
- Broad expertise across all key commercial functions, including marketing, market access, sales, and operations, is required.
