Key Responsibilities of VP, Logistics & Distribution with a Major Retailer – Los Angeles, CA

Strategic Leadership & Network Design

Develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-year logistics and distribution strategy that supports the company’s growth, profitability, and omnichannel objectives. Continuously analyze and optimize the distribution network footprint, including location, size, and function of fulfillment centers.

P&L and Financial Management

Assume full P&L responsibility for all logistics and distribution operations. Develop and manage annual operating budgets, capital expenditure plans, and financial forecasts. Drive cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality or safety.

Operational Excellence

Direct all inbound and outbound logistics, including receiving, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment (both B2B and D2C), and shipping. Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, order accuracy, cost-per-unit, and inventory turns.

Transportation & Fleet Management

Oversee all domestic and international transportation functions, including carrier selection, contract negotiation, and performance management for all modes (FTL, LTL, parcel, ocean, air). Optimize routing and logistics to minimize transit times and costs.

Team Development & Leadership

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of logistics professionals, including directors, managers, and front-line staff across multiple sites. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement. Implement robust succession planning.

Technology & Innovation

Champion the selection and implementation of advanced supply chain technologies, including Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and automation/robotics. Leverage data analytics and business intelligence to drive informed decision-making.

Inventory Control & Management

Partner with Merchandising and Planning teams to ensure optimal inventory levels across the network. Implement best-in-class inventory control processes, cycle counting programs, and loss prevention measures to ensure accuracy and minimize shrink.

E-commerce & Omnichannel Fulfillment

Spearhead the strategy and execution for direct-to-consumer fulfillment, ensuring a seamless customer experience that meets or exceeds modern delivery expectations. Develop and refine omnichannel capabilities such as ship-from-store and buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS).

Vendor & 3PL Partnership Management

Manage relationships and negotiate contracts with key vendors, including third-party logistics (3PL) providers, carriers, and equipment suppliers. Hold partners accountable to strict service level agreements (SLAs).

Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure all logistics and transportation operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA, C-TPAT). Develop and maintain robust safety programs and disaster recovery plans to mitigate risk within the supply chain.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Serve as a key strategic partner to executive leadership and collaborate closely with heads of Retail Operations, Merchandising, IT, Finance, and Human Resources to ensure alignment and drive enterprise-wide initiatives.

Educational Background

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is strongly preferred.

Executive Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in supply chain and logistics, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership role (Director or VP level) overseeing a large, complex distribution network.

Industry Expertise

Significant experience within the retail industry is essential. Experience with a major national retailer with a significant brick-and-mortar and e-commerce presence is highly desirable.
