Key Responsibilities of SVP, Corporate Planning & Development with a Public FinServ Firm – Boston, MA

Strategic Planning Leadership

Spearhead the company’s annual and long-range strategic planning cycle. Collaborate with executive leadership and business unit heads to define strategic priorities, set corporate objectives, and establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure success. Conduct comprehensive analyses of market trends, competitive intelligence, and macroeconomic factors to inform strategic direction.

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Execution

Lead the end-to-end M&A process. This includes developing the acquisition strategy, identifying and screening potential targets, conducting rigorous financial modeling and valuation, leading due diligence efforts, negotiating term sheets and definitive agreements, and securing necessary approvals.

Post-Merger Integration (PMI)

Oversee the critical post-merger integration process in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of leaders from operations, technology, HR, and finance. Develop detailed integration plans to ensure seamless transitions, capture identified synergies, and achieve the strategic and financial objectives of the transaction.

Corporate Development & Strategic Initiatives

Proactively identify, evaluate, and execute a wide range of corporate development opportunities beyond M&A, including strategic alliances, joint ventures, divestitures, and other inorganic growth initiatives. Develop and present compelling business cases for these initiatives to senior management.

Advanced Financial Modeling and Analysis

Build, maintain, and oversee the development of complex financial models to support all strategic and transactional activities. This includes valuation models (DCF, precedent transactions, comparable company analysis), pro-forma combination models, and scenario analyses to assess the financial impact of various strategic options.

Market and Competitive Intelligence

Serve as the firm’s expert on the competitive landscape and industry dynamics. Continuously monitor and analyze competitor strategies, industry trends, technological disruptions, and regulatory changes to identify potential opportunities and threats.

Executive and Board Communication

Prepare and deliver high-impact presentations and reports for the executive leadership team and the Board of Directors. Clearly articulate strategic recommendations, M&A theses, valuation analyses, and the financial and operational implications of key decisions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Foster strong relationships and work collaboratively with senior leaders across the organization, including Finance, Legal, Risk, Technology, and all business lines, to ensure strategic alignment and successful execution of corporate initiatives.

Team Leadership and Development

Build, manage, and mentor a high-performing Corporate Planning & Development team. Foster a culture of analytical excellence, strategic thinking, and continuous improvement. Provide guidance and development opportunities to team members to enhance their skills and career progression.

Requirements for the SVP, Corporate Planning & Development with a Public FinServ Firm – Boston, MA

Educational Background

An MBA from a top-tier business school is strongly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related quantitative field is required. A CFA designation is a significant plus.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in corporate development, investment banking (M&A), private equity, or strategy consulting. A substantial portion of this experience must be within or serving the financial services industry (e.g., banking, asset management, insurance, fintech).

M&A Expertise

Demonstrated, hands-on experience leading multiple M&A transactions through the entire deal lifecycle, from origination and negotiation to closing and integration. Proven success in both buy-side and sell-side advisory roles is highly valued.

Strategic Acumen

Exceptional strategic and conceptual thinking skills. The ability to analyze complex situations, synthesize vast amounts of information, and develop clear, actionable strategies and recommendations.

Financial and Analytical Prowess

Mastery of corporate finance principles and advanced financial modeling and valuation techniques. Meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to analytical rigor.

Leadership and Influence

Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop teams. Must possess outstanding executive presence and the ability to influence and build consensus at all levels of the organization, particularly with C-suite executives and board members.

Communication Skills

Public Company Acumen

Direct experience working in a publicly-traded corporate environment is essential. This includes a strong understanding of investor relations, disclosure requirements, and the nuances of public market dynamics. Familiarity with reviewing public company filings and understanding their strategic implications is critical.

Project Management

Excellent project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously under tight deadlines.
