Key Responsibilities of VP, Distribution Operations with a Major Food Distributor – Memphis, TN

Strategic Leadership & Network Optimization

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, multi-year strategic plan for the distribution network that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives and growth targets.
  • Conduct continuous network analysis to optimize facility locations, inventory positioning, and transportation routes, ensuring maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Lead initiatives for network expansion, including site selection, facility design, and the seamless integration of new distribution centers into the existing infrastructure.
  • Champion the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and innovative operational models to create a sustainable competitive advantage.
  • Collaborate with executive peers in Sales, Procurement, and Finance to ensure a cohesive and integrated supply chain strategy.

Operational Excellence & Performance Management

  • Establish, monitor, and drive accountability for Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) across all facets of distribution, including on-time delivery, order accuracy, cost per case, inventory turns, and safety metrics.
  • Implement and sustain Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies to eliminate waste, streamline workflows, and enhance productivity across all distribution centers.
  • Oversee the management of a large-scale private and third-party transportation fleet, optimizing routing, carrier relationships, and ensuring compliance with all DOT regulations.
  • Direct robust inventory control processes, including cycle counting, slotting optimization, and product rotation strategies to minimize spoilage and ensure product integrity within the cold chain.
  • Ensure the highest standards of facility maintenance, sanitation, and organization, adhering to all food safety regulations (e.g., FSMA, HACCP). A deep understanding of modern supply chain management principles is essential for success.

Financial Acumen & Budgetary Control

  • Assume full P&L responsibility for the entire distribution operations division, managing a significant multi-million dollar operating budget.
  • Develop annual budgets and quarterly forecasts, meticulously managing labor, transportation, facility, and supply costs to meet or exceed financial targets.
  • Lead the capital expenditure (CapEx) planning process for distribution, building strong business cases for investments in technology, automation, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Analyze financial and operational data to identify trends, pinpoint opportunities for cost savings, and mitigate financial risks.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of regional directors, general managers, and support staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and provide regular coaching and feedback to build leadership capabilities at all levels of the organization.
  • Champion a ‘Safety First’ culture, ensuring comprehensive training, strict adherence to safety protocols, and a proactive approach to accident prevention.
  • Develop and implement succession plans for critical roles within the distribution organization to ensure business continuity and career progression for top talent.
  • Partner with Human Resources on talent acquisition, employee relations, and compensation strategies to attract and retain the best talent in the industry.

Requirements for the VP, Distribution Operations with a Major Food Distributor – Memphis, TN

Required Qualifications:

Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience in supply chain, logistics, and distribution operations, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role (Director level or above) overseeing multiple facilities.

Industry Knowledge

Direct experience in the food and beverage distribution industry, with a strong understanding of cold chain logistics, perishable goods, and food safety regulations.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.

Financial Skills

Demonstrated P&L ownership of a large, complex operation. Proven ability to develop and manage significant operational and capital budgets.

Leadership

Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and motivate large, diverse teams across multiple locations. Proven track record of building and developing high-performing teams.

Technical Proficiency

Expertise with modern Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and ERP systems. High proficiency in data analysis and using metrics to drive performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced Degree

An MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant field is highly preferred.

Continuous Improvement

Certification in Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.

Automation Experience

Experience with designing, implementing, and managing automated warehouse systems and robotics.

Union Experience

Experience managing operations in both union and non-union environments is a significant plus.
