As the Director of Global Procurement, you will oversee all aspects of the company’s indirect and direct sourcing and procurement activities on a global scale. Key Responsibilities of Director, Global Procurement with a Major Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
The Director of Global Procurement will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Strategic Sourcing & Category Management
Develop, implement, and lead comprehensive global sourcing strategies for all major spend categories, including Goods Not For Resale (GNFR) such as marketing, IT hardware/software, professional services, logistics, and store operations, as well as select direct material categories. Conduct in-depth market analysis to identify trends, opportunities, and potential risks.
Supplier Relationship Management (SRM)
Establish and maintain strong, strategic relationships with key global suppliers. Develop a robust SRM program to drive supplier performance, innovation, and value. Lead supplier negotiations for major contracts, ensuring favorable terms, pricing, and service levels.
Cost Optimization & Savings
Identify and execute strategic cost-saving initiatives across the organization. Develop and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure procurement performance, including cost savings, cost avoidance, supplier performance, and spend under management. Deliver annual savings targets while maintaining or improving quality and service.
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of procurement managers and specialists. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented environment. Set clear goals and objectives for the team, provide regular feedback and coaching, and support their professional growth and development.
Process Improvement & Technology
Drive continuous improvement of procurement processes, policies, and systems. Champion the adoption of procurement best practices and technologies (e.g., P2P, e-sourcing, contract management systems) to enhance efficiency, transparency, and control. Ensure compliance with all internal policies and external regulations.
Risk Management & Compliance
Develop and implement a comprehensive supplier risk management framework. Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate supply chain risks, including geopolitical, financial, and operational risks. Ensure all procurement activities are conducted ethically and in compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a strategic business partner to senior leaders and stakeholders across the organization. Collaborate closely with Finance to manage budgets and financial planning, with Operations to ensure supply continuity, and with Legal to mitigate contractual risks. Provide expert procurement guidance and support for key business initiatives.
Budget & Financial Oversight
Develop and manage the annual operating budget for the procurement department. Provide accurate forecasting and reporting on procurement spend and savings. Contribute to the company’s overall financial planning and strategy by delivering predictable and sustainable cost reductions.
Requirements for the Director, Global Procurement with a Major Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
We are seeking a candidate who meets the following qualifications and possesses the key attributes necessary for success in this demanding role:
Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in strategic sourcing and procurement, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role managing a global team. Direct experience within the retail, CPG, or a related fast-paced industry is strongly preferred.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Finance, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly desirable.
Global Sourcing Expertise
Demonstrated experience in developing and executing global sourcing strategies across a wide range of indirect and direct spend categories. Proven ability to manage complex international supplier relationships and navigate global supply chains.
Negotiation & Contract Management
Master-level negotiation skills with a proven track record of successfully negotiating high-value, complex contracts with global suppliers. Deep understanding of contract law and commercial terms.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership and team management skills. Ability to inspire, motivate, and develop a diverse team of professionals. Experience building a procurement function from the ground up or leading a significant transformation is a plus.
Analytical & Strategic Mindset
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze complex data, identify trends, and make data-driven strategic decisions. Must be a strategic thinker who can see the big picture and align procurement strategy with business goals.
Technical Proficiency
Proficiency in procurement technologies and systems, such as SAP Ariba, Coupa, Oracle, or similar ERP/P2P platforms. Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
Certifications
Professional certification such as Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) or from the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply (CIPS) is highly regarded.
Communication Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to present complex information clearly and concisely to a variety of audiences, including executive leadership. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
