As the VP of Logistics & Transportation, you will be the principal architect of the company’s end-to-end logistics strategy. You will assume full ownership of a vast network that includes inbound and outbound transportation, a multi-site network of distribution centers, last-mile delivery operations, and a significant private fleet. Your mission will be to build a world-class logistics organization that is not only efficient and cost-effective but also agile, scalable, and technologically advanced. You will be responsible for a substantial budget and will lead a large, geographically dispersed team of dedicated logistics professionals. This position requires a strategic thinker who can operate at a 30,000-foot view to set long-term direction while also being able to dive into the details to drive execution and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities of VP, Logistics & Transportation with a Major Food Distributor – Memphis, TN

Strategic Leadership & Network Optimization

Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive, multi-year logistics and transportation strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Continuously analyze and optimize the distribution network footprint, transportation routes, and operational workflows to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer service.

Transportation Management

Oversee all aspects of domestic transportation, including a large private fleet, dedicated contract carriers, and a network of 3PL partners. Lead carrier sourcing, negotiation, and relationship management to ensure optimal rates and service levels. Implement and manage robust Transportation Management Systems (TMS) to drive visibility, efficiency, and data-driven decision-making.

Warehouse & Distribution Operations

Direct the operational performance of all distribution centers, ensuring excellence in receiving, inventory control, order fulfillment, and shipping. Champion the implementation of best-in-class warehouse management practices and systems (WMS). Maintain the highest standards of cold chain integrity for perishable and frozen goods.

Financial Acumen & Budget Management

Develop and manage a significant annual operating budget for the entire logistics and transportation function. Drive financial performance by identifying and executing cost-saving initiatives, improving asset utilization, and implementing rigorous financial controls. Provide regular reporting and analysis on key performance indicators (KPIs) to the executive team.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of directors, managers, and front-line staff across multiple locations. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, safety, and continuous improvement. Implement talent development programs and succession plans to build organizational capability for the future.

Technology & Innovation

Champion the adoption and integration of cutting-edge logistics technologies, including TMS, WMS, telematics, route optimization software, and analytics platforms. Stay abreast of industry trends and innovations to ensure the company remains at the forefront of logistics excellence.

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

Ensure the entire logistics operation maintains unwavering compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including DOT, FMCSA, FDA, and FSMA standards. Develop and enforce rigorous safety programs to protect employees and company assets. Proactively identify and mitigate potential risks within the supply chain.

Performance Management & Continuous Improvement

Establish and monitor a robust set of KPIs to measure performance across all facets of the logistics operation (e.g., on-time delivery, cost per case, order accuracy, safety incidents). Utilize Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies to drive operational excellence and systematically eliminate waste. According to the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), leveraging such methodologies is key to modern logistics success.

Requirements for the VP, Logistics & Transportation with a Major Food Distributor – Memphis, TN

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in supply chain and logistics management, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership capacity (Director or VP level) overseeing a large, complex, multi-site distribution network.

Industry Expertise

Direct experience in the food distribution, consumer packaged goods (CPG), grocery, or refrigerated/frozen goods industry is essential. Deep knowledge of cold chain logistics is a critical requirement.

Operational Leadership

Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale transportation operations (including private fleets and 3PLs) and a network of distribution centers. Demonstrated success in network optimization and driving significant cost and service improvements.

Financial Skills

Strong financial acumen with extensive experience developing and managing large, multi-million dollar budgets. Must be highly analytical and adept at using data to drive strategic decisions.

Technical Proficiency

Advanced knowledge of modern logistics technology, including Tier 1 TMS and WMS platforms. Experience leading technology implementation projects is a significant plus.

Leadership Qualities

Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. A proven ability to inspire and motivate large teams, build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and effectively manage change in a dynamic environment.

Certifications

Professional certifications such as Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution (CLTD) are highly desirable.
