This is a critical leadership role reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and serving as a key member of the finance leadership team. The successful candidate will be a strategic thought partner to the executive team, responsible for steering the company’s financial future through robust planning, insightful analysis, and data-driven decision support.
As the VP of FP&A, you will be at the nexus of strategy and execution. You will lead a global team of finance professionals and be responsible for all aspects of financial planning, forecasting, budgeting, and performance management. This role requires a leader who can not only manage the traditional FP&A functions but also transform them, leveraging technology and best practices to build a world-class, predictive, and agile finance organization. Key Responsibilities of VP, FP&A with a Public Software Company – San Jose, CA
Strategic Financial Planning and Forecasting
- Lead the end-to-end annual operating plan (AOP) and budgeting process, collaborating with executive leadership and department heads to establish ambitious yet achievable financial goals and resource allocation plans.
- Drive the long-range strategic planning process, developing multi-year financial models that align with the company’s strategic vision and market opportunities.
- Oversee the development of sophisticated, driver-based financial models for rolling forecasts, scenario analysis, and sensitivity testing to provide leadership with a clear view of potential outcomes and risks.
- Provide financial leadership on strategic projects, including potential mergers and acquisitions (M&A), divestitures, and other corporate development activities, by leading due diligence, valuation, and integration planning.
Business Partnership and Decision Support
- Act as a trusted financial advisor to the C-suite and business unit leaders, providing deep financial insights and actionable recommendations to optimize performance and drive profitable growth.
- Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics for the business, translating complex financial data into a compelling story that informs strategic decision-making.
- Lead financial analysis for key business initiatives, such as new product introductions, geographic expansion, pricing strategies, and major capital investments, ensuring a strong return on investment.
- Partner closely with Sales, Marketing, R&D, and G&A functions to provide financial guidance, challenge assumptions, and ensure alignment with corporate financial objectives.
Performance Management and Reporting
- Oversee the preparation of comprehensive monthly and quarterly management reporting packages, including detailed variance analysis of actuals versus budget/forecast, and present findings to the executive team and Board of Directors.
- Partner with the Investor Relations team to develop earnings call scripts, press releases, and other external communications, ensuring a consistent and accurate financial narrative for the investment community.
- Collaborate with the Corporate Controller to ensure a seamless and efficient month-end close process, providing critical inputs and analysis.
- Continuously enhance the company’s management reporting framework to provide deeper insights into business performance and emerging trends.
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global FP&A team, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, continuous improvement, and professional growth.
- Set clear goals and objectives for the team, providing regular feedback and coaching to elevate performance and build a strong talent pipeline.
- Champion the adoption of new tools and technologies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the FP&A function.
Process and Systems Enhancement
- Evaluate and enhance existing FP&A processes, systems, and tools to scale with the company’s growth, driving automation and efficiency wherever possible.
- Champion data integrity and governance to ensure the finance organization remains the single source of truth for financial and operational data across the company.
- Stay abreast of the latest trends and best practices, working to implement a modern Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) function that is predictive, agile, and deeply integrated into the business.
Requirements for the VP, FP&A with a Public Software Company – San Jose, CA
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
- A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in finance, with at least 7 years in a senior FP&A leadership role (Director level or above).
- Extensive experience within a publicly-traded software or SaaS company is mandatory.
- Proven track record of successfully leading and developing a global FP&A team.
- Deep expertise in financial modeling, forecasting, and budgeting in a complex, high-growth environment.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to translate complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
- Exceptional presentation and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to influence and build consensus at the executive level.
- Experience supporting investor relations and interacting with the investment community.
- Expert-level proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, as well as hands-on experience with modern EPM/FP&A software (e.g., Anaplan, Adaptive Insights, Planful, Oracle Hyperion).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is highly preferred.
- Experience leading a company through an IPO or significant M&A transactions.
- Deep understanding of SaaS metrics (e.g., ARR, LTV, CAC, NRR) and subscription-based revenue models.
- Experience working in a company with revenues exceeding $1 billion.
- A strategic mindset with a bias for action and a passion for driving business results.
