Key Responsibilities of VP, Corporate Tax Planning with a Public Tech Co. – San Jose, CA

The VP of Corporate Tax Planning will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, encompassing all facets of strategic tax management. Your duties will be critical to the company’s financial performance and strategic direction.

Global Tax Strategy & Planning

Develop, implement, and maintain the company’s global tax planning strategies to optimize tax efficiency and minimize liabilities in alignment with business objectives. This includes structuring for international operations, managing foreign tax credits, and navigating the complexities of digital services taxes and other emerging tax regimes.

Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A)

Lead all tax-related aspects of corporate transactions, including due diligence, structuring of acquisitions and divestitures, and post-acquisition integration planning to ensure seamless and tax-efficient outcomes.

Transfer Pricing

Oversee the global transfer pricing strategy, policies, and documentation. Ensure intercompany transactions are conducted at arm’s length and are well-documented to withstand scrutiny from tax authorities worldwide, in compliance with BEPS and local country requirements.

Tax Compliance & Reporting

While this is a planning-focused role, you will provide ultimate oversight and strategic direction for the global tax provision process (ASC 740) and ensure the accuracy and timeliness of all U.S. federal, state, local, and international tax compliance filings.

Tax Controversy & Audits

Manage and direct the company’s response to tax audits and inquiries from the IRS, state, and foreign tax authorities. Develop and implement strategies to effectively defend the company’s tax positions and negotiate favorable resolutions.

Legislative Monitoring

Proactively monitor, analyze, and communicate the potential impact of proposed and enacted tax legislation and regulations on the company’s operations and financial position. Develop strategies to adapt to changes in the global tax environment.

Executive Advisory

Serve as the primary tax advisor to the CFO, CEO, and other members of the senior leadership team. Provide clear, concise, and practical advice on the tax implications of major business decisions, strategic initiatives, and new business models.

Team Leadership & Development

Lead, mentor, and develop a world-class corporate tax team. Foster an environment of high performance, professional growth, and collaboration, ensuring the team has the skills and resources to meet current and future challenges.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Partner closely with leaders in Finance, Legal, Treasury, Corporate Development, and various business units to provide integrated, strategic tax support for all company operations.

Requirements for the VP, Corporate Tax Planning with a Public Tech Co. – San Jose, CA

We are seeking a distinguished and accomplished tax leader with a proven track record of success in a complex, global public company environment. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic vision, and exceptional leadership qualities.

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. A CPA certification and/or a Juris Doctor (JD) with an LL.M. in Taxation is strongly preferred. A Master’s in Taxation (MST) is also highly desirable.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive experience in corporate tax, with a significant portion of that time spent in a senior leadership role within a large, multinational public company. Experience in the technology sector is a significant asset. A combination of Big 4 public accounting and in-house industry experience is ideal.

Technical Expertise

Demonstrated mastery of complex U.S. and international tax concepts, including Subchapter C, M&A, tax treaties, transfer pricing, and the tax accounting provisions of ASC 740. Deep familiarity with the Internal Revenue Code and relevant treasury regulations is essential.

Strategic Mindset

Proven ability to think strategically and translate complex tax issues into business-oriented recommendations. Experience developing and executing long-range tax plans that create shareholder value.

Leadership & Management

Extensive experience leading, managing, and mentoring a team of tax professionals. A track record of building high-performing teams and developing talent.

Communication Skills

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. The ability to articulate complex tax matters in a clear and persuasive manner to diverse audiences, including executive leadership, the Board of Directors, and non-finance stakeholders.
