The SVP of Commercial Banking will have a broad range of responsibilities focused on leadership, strategic growth, and risk management. Success in this role will be measured by team performance, portfolio growth, credit quality, and overall contribution to the bank’s regional objectives.
Strategic Leadership and Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of commercial relationship managers and support staff, fostering a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

- Cultivate and maintain a robust network of Centers of Influence (COIs), including attorneys, CPAs, and other community leaders, to generate a consistent pipeline of qualified referrals.
- Represent the bank at industry conferences, community events, and professional networking functions to enhance its reputation as a leading commercial banking partner.
- Maintain a deep understanding of the competitive landscape and local economic trends to identify and capitalize on new business opportunities.
Portfolio Management and Credit Administration
- Assume ultimate responsibility for the growth, profitability, and credit quality of a complex and significant commercial loan portfolio.
- Provide expert guidance on complex credit structuring, underwriting, and pricing to ensure deals meet the bank’s risk appetite and profitability targets.
- Oversee the credit approval process for the team, presenting loan requests to senior credit officers and/or loan committee with well-supported analysis and recommendations.
- Ensure timely and accurate portfolio monitoring, including the review of financial statements, covenant compliance, and risk ratings.
- Proactively identify and manage potential problem loans, working collaboratively with credit administration to develop effective resolution strategies.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of and ensure strict adherence to all relevant commercial lending regulations, internal policies, and compliance standards.
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary advisor and point of contact for the bank’s most significant commercial clients, building deep, multi-faceted relationships based on trust and strategic value.
- Conduct regular, in-depth client reviews to understand their evolving business needs and identify opportunities to provide additional value.
- Champion a holistic approach to relationship banking by actively cross-selling a full suite of bank products and services, including treasury management, international banking, and private wealth management.
- Ensure the highest levels of client satisfaction and retention through proactive communication and exceptional service delivery.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned and respected leader in the Portland commercial banking community with a proven track record of success. Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
- A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in commercial banking, with a strong focus on C&I lending and middle-market client relationships.
- At least 5-7 years of direct leadership and team management experience, with demonstrated success in hiring, coaching, and developing relationship managers.
- Completion of a formal bank credit training program is required.
