Key Responsibilities of Head of Autonomous Systems

Strategic Leadership & Vision

Define, articulate, and execute the long-term strategic roadmap and technical vision for all autonomous systems initiatives. This includes identifying emerging technologies, market opportunities, and competitive landscapes to position the company as a leader in the autonomous space. You will be responsible for mapping out the evolution of our autonomous capabilities, from fundamental research to mature product offerings, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives.

Team Building & Mentorship

Recruit, attract, and retain a diverse, high-performing team of world-class engineers, researchers, and scientists across various disciplines, including AI, Machine Learning, Robotics, Computer Vision, Control Systems, and Software Engineering. Foster a collaborative, innovative, and empowering environment that encourages professional growth, knowledge sharing, and relentless pursuit of excellence. Provide strong mentorship and guidance, nurturing the next generation of autonomous systems leaders.

Research & Development Oversight

Drive cutting-edge R&D efforts in core autonomous systems areas, such as perception (sensor fusion, object detection, tracking), localization and mapping (SLAM), path planning, motion control, decision-making algorithms, human-robot interaction, and robust system architectures. Ensure that research translates effectively into tangible, deployable technologies and intellectual property.

Product Development & Commercialization

Oversee the end-to-end development of autonomous products and features, from initial prototyping and proof-of-concept to robust engineering, testing, validation, and successful commercial deployment. Work closely with product management, hardware engineering, and operations teams to deliver market-leading solutions that meet customer needs and exceed performance expectations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Act as a key interface and collaborator across various departments, including Hardware, Software, Product Management, Business Development, Legal, and Operations. Ensure seamless integration of autonomous systems into broader product ecosystems and foster strong inter-departmental synergy to achieve company goals.

Safety, Reliability & Ethical AI

Establish and enforce the highest standards for safety, reliability, and ethical development within all autonomous systems. Implement rigorous testing protocols, validation methodologies, and safety-critical systems design principles to ensure regulatory compliance and public trust. Champion responsible AI development, addressing potential biases and ensuring transparency and accountability in autonomous decision-making.

Budget & Resource Management

Effectively manage significant departmental budgets, allocate resources strategically, and make informed decisions on investments in talent, tools, and infrastructure. Optimize resource utilization to maximize impact and efficiency while adhering to financial objectives.

External Engagement & Partnerships

Represent the company as a thought leader at industry conferences, academic forums, and technical summits. Foster strategic partnerships with universities, research institutions, and technology providers to accelerate innovation and expand capabilities.

Intellectual Property Development

Drive the generation of novel ideas, inventions, and patents to strengthen the company’s intellectual property portfolio and maintain a competitive edge in the autonomous systems landscape.

Requirements for the Head of Autonomous Systems

Educational Background

A Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Mechatronics, or a closely related quantitative field from a top-tier institution.

Extensive Experience

A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in the field of autonomous systems research, development, and engineering, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership, management, or director-level role overseeing significant teams and projects.

Deep Technical Acumen

  • Profound theoretical and practical understanding of core AI/ML concepts, including Deep Learning (CNNs, RNNs, Transformers), Reinforcement Learning, and classical machine learning algorithms, particularly as applied to perception and decision-making in autonomous agents.
  • Expertise in robotics fundamentals, including kinematics, dynamics, control theory (PID, LQR, Model Predictive Control), motion planning (A*, RRT, PRM), and trajectory optimization.
  • Extensive experience with various sensor modalities (LiDAR, Radar, Cameras, Ultrasonic, IMU, GPS) and advanced sensor fusion techniques (Kalman Filters, Particle Filters, Extended Kalman Filters) for robust perception and state estimation.
  • Strong background in computer vision, image processing, object detection, tracking, and semantic segmentation for real-time applications.
  • Demonstrated experience with simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithms, visual odometry, and global/local localization strategies.
  • Proficiency in modern software engineering practices, including C++, Python, ROS (Robot Operating System), simulation environments (Gazebo, CARLA), and version control systems (Git).
  • Familiarity with functional safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262, IEC 61508) and experience designing and validating safety-critical systems.

Proven Leadership & Management Skills

  • Exceptional ability to recruit, mentor, motivate, and manage large, multidisciplinary engineering and research teams, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, technical roadmap development, and execution, with a track record of delivering complex autonomous systems projects on time and within budget.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with a pragmatic approach to overcoming technical challenges and navigating ambiguity.

Prior experience in relevant industries such as autonomous vehicles (automotive, trucking), aerospace (drones, UAVs), industrial automation, logistics, or advanced consumer robotics is highly desirable.
