Key Responsibilities of General Manager (Distribution Center)
Strategic Leadership & Operational Excellence
- Develop, communicate, and execute strategic plans for the distribution center, aligning with overall company objectives and supply chain goals.
- Oversee all aspects of DC operations including receiving, inventory management, order fulfillment, shipping, and returns processing, ensuring maximum efficiency and accuracy.
- Implement and champion Lean methodologies, Six Sigma principles, and other continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and optimize workflows across all departments.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, inventory accuracy, labor costs, safety records, and productivity rates, taking proactive measures to address variances and drive performance improvements.
Financial Management & P&L Oversight
- Manage the distribution center’s budget, including forecasting, expense control, and capital expenditure planning, to ensure financial targets are met or exceeded.
- Analyze financial data and operational metrics to identify cost-saving opportunities and implement strategies to improve profitability.
- Ensure compliance with all financial policies and procedures, maintaining rigorous internal controls.
Team Leadership & Development
- Recruit, train, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of managers and associates, fostering a positive, engaging, and performance-driven work environment.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and identify professional development opportunities for all team members.
- Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous learning, empowering employees to take ownership of their roles and contribute to organizational success.
- Manage labor relations effectively, ensuring fair practices and compliance with all employment laws and company policies.
Safety, Security & Compliance
- Establish and enforce rigorous safety protocols and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for all employees and compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Develop and implement robust security measures to protect company assets, inventory, and data.
- Ensure the distribution center operates in full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including environmental, health, and transportation laws.
- Lead investigations into incidents, near misses, and quality issues, implementing corrective and preventive actions.
Technology & Process Innovation
- Evaluate and implement advanced Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), automation technologies, and other logistics software to enhance operational efficiency and data visibility.
- Champion initiatives for Supply Chain Optimization, leveraging data analytics and technological advancements to streamline processes from inbound receiving to outbound shipping.
- Stay abreast of industry best practices and emerging technologies, continuously seeking innovative solutions to improve DC performance.
Customer & Vendor Relations
- Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders (sales, customer service, procurement) to ensure seamless order fulfillment and exceptional customer satisfaction.
- Manage relationships with external vendors, carriers, and service providers, negotiating contracts and ensuring service level agreements (SLAs) are met.
- Address and resolve customer complaints or issues related to logistics and distribution in a timely and effective manner.
Requirements for the General Manager (Distribution Center)
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field is required.
- Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) strongly preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in a large-scale distribution center or warehouse environment, with at least 5-7 years in a General Manager or equivalent senior leadership role.
- Proven experience managing facilities with significant SKU counts, high transaction volumes, and diverse product categories (e.g., retail, e-commerce, manufacturing, 3PL).
- Demonstrated success in P&L management, budget development, and cost control within a distribution setting.
- Extensive experience with modern Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), ideally including implementation and optimization.
- Strong track record of implementing continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma) and driving tangible results.
