Key Responsibilities of Director of Quality (Defense)

As the Director of Quality (Defense), your responsibilities will encompass a broad spectrum of strategic and operational duties, critical to maintaining the highest standards of excellence in a defense manufacturing environment. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategic Quality Leadership

Develop, implement, and continuously refine the organization’s overarching Quality Management System (QMS) strategy, aligning it with business objectives, defense industry standards (e.g., AS9100D, ISO 9001), and regulatory requirements (e.g., ITAR, DFARS). Provide strategic direction and leadership for all quality assurance and quality control activities across the organization.

Regulatory Compliance & Certification

Ensure rigorous adherence to all applicable national and international defense regulations, standards, and customer-specific requirements. Lead the preparation for, and successful execution of, internal and external audits, including those conducted by the DCMA, ISO registrars, and other certifying bodies. Maintain all necessary certifications and accreditations.

Team Leadership & Development

Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing quality team, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and professional growth. Provide strong leadership, guidance, and technical expertise to quality managers, engineers, and inspectors.

Process Improvement & Operational Excellence

Drive continuous improvement initiatives using methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, and other advanced quality tools. Identify areas for process optimization, defect reduction, and efficiency gains across manufacturing, engineering, and supply chain operations. Implement robust root cause analysis and corrective/preventative action (CAPA) systems.

Supplier Quality Management

Establish and manage comprehensive supplier quality programs, including supplier qualification, performance monitoring, audits, and corrective action processes. Collaborate closely with procurement and engineering teams to ensure the quality of incoming materials and components from the supply chain.

Customer & Stakeholder Engagement

Serve as the primary point of contact for all quality-related matters with defense customers, government representatives, and regulatory agencies. Proactively address customer concerns, manage quality excursions, and ensure customer satisfaction through robust problem-solving and communication.

Data Analysis & Reporting

Oversee the collection, analysis, and reporting of key quality metrics and performance indicators. Utilize statistical process control (SPC) and other analytical tools to identify trends, predict potential issues, and inform strategic decisions. Present regular quality performance reviews to senior leadership.

Risk Management

Implement proactive quality risk management strategies, identifying potential quality risks in design, manufacturing, and supply chain, and developing mitigation plans to minimize impact on product reliability and program schedules.

Budget & Resource Management

Manage the quality department’s budget, resources, and staffing levels effectively to achieve strategic objectives. Optimize resource allocation for maximum impact on quality outcomes.

New Product Introduction (NPI) Support

Integrate quality planning into the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, ensuring design for quality (DFQ), robust validation, and smooth transition to production.

Requirements for the Director of Quality (Defense)

To be considered for this critical leadership role, candidates must possess a unique blend of technical expertise, strategic acumen, and demonstrated leadership capabilities within the defense sector. The essential requirements include:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Manufacturing preferred), Quality Management, or a related technical field from an accredited institution. A Master’s degree or MBA is highly desirable.

Experience

A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in Quality Management, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Director, Senior Manager) specifically within the defense, aerospace, or highly regulated manufacturing industries.

Defense Industry Expertise

Proven experience working with defense contractors, government agencies, and understanding of the unique requirements, standards, and culture of the defense sector.

Quality System Expertise

In-depth, hands-on experience and expert-level knowledge of AS9100 (D preferred), ISO 9001, and other relevant quality management system standards. Demonstrated success in implementing, maintaining, and improving QMS.

Regulatory Compliance

Strong understanding and practical experience with defense-specific regulations, including ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations), DFARS (Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement), and direct experience interacting with the DCMA (Defense Contract Management Agency) during audits and reviews.

Certifications

Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) from ASQ is highly preferred. Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification is a significant advantage.

Technical Acumen

Strong understanding of various manufacturing processes (e.g., machining, electronics assembly, composites, welding, precision assembly), inspection methodologies, metrology, and statistical techniques.

Leadership & Management Skills

Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop large, diverse teams. Excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and presentation skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.

Problem-Solving & Analytical Skills

Security Clearance

Must be a U.S. Citizen and possess or be able to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (Secret or Top Secret preferred).
