Key Responsibilities of Director, Logistics Strategy with a Major Retailer – Indianapolis, IN
As the Director of Logistics Strategy, you will be responsible for the comprehensive analysis, planning, and execution of our client’s long-term logistics and supply chain initiatives. Your work will ensure the network is optimized for speed, cost, and reliability.
Strategic Roadmap Development
Develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive 3-5 year logistics strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives, growth projections, and customer experience goals.
Network Design & Optimization
Conduct continuous, data-driven analysis of the entire distribution network, including the location, size, and function of distribution centers, fulfillment hubs, and cross-dock facilities. Utilize advanced modeling software to simulate and recommend network changes that optimize inventory placement, reduce transit times, and lower transportation costs.
Transportation Strategy
Architect a multi-modal transportation strategy that balances cost and service. Evaluate and optimize carrier relationships, freight agreements, and routing for inbound, outbound, and last-mile delivery.
Technology & Innovation Leadership
Stay at the forefront of industry trends and champion the evaluation and implementation of advanced supply chain technologies. This includes Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), robotics, automation, and visibility platforms to drive efficiency and accuracy.
Capital Project Management
Develop robust business cases for significant capital investments in logistics infrastructure and technology. Lead cross-functional teams to manage these projects from conception through to successful implementation and ROI realization.
Financial & Performance Management
Oversee the development of the logistics strategy budget and long-range financial plans. Establish, monitor, and report on a suite of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as cost-per-unit, on-time delivery, order accuracy, and network capacity utilization.
Cost Reduction Initiatives

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Requirements for the Director, Logistics Strategy with a Major Retailer – Indianapolis, IN
We are seeking a seasoned professional with a proven track record of strategic success in complex, large-scale logistics environments. The ideal candidate will possess a unique blend of analytical prowess, business acumen, and leadership gravitas.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
- A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in supply chain and logistics, with at least 5 years in a strategic leadership role focusing on network design, transportation strategy, or logistics engineering.
- Direct experience within the retail, e-commerce, or consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry is essential.
- Proven expertise in using network modeling and simulation software (e.g., Llamasoft/Coupa, JDA/Blue Yonder, or similar) to drive strategic decisions.
- Deep understanding of logistics principles, including inventory management, warehousing, distribution, transportation (all modes), and last-mile delivery.
- Strong financial acumen with experience developing budgets, managing a P&L, creating business cases for capital expenditures, and demonstrating ROI.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to interpret complex data sets and translate them into actionable strategic insights.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex strategies and influence stakeholders at all levels, including C-suite executives.
- Demonstrated experience leading and developing teams of technical and analytical professionals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An MBA or Master’s degree in Supply Chain Management or a related discipline is highly preferred.
- Experience managing logistics in an omnichannel retail environment, balancing the needs of brick-and-mortar stores and direct-to-consumer e-commerce.
- Certification in Lean, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Hands-on experience with the selection and implementation of major logistics technology platforms (WMS, TMS, etc.) and automation/robotics solutions.
- Strong negotiation skills with experience in managing relationships and contracts with 3PLs, carriers, and technology vendors.
