Key Responsibilities of Director of Logistics with a Major Retailer – Houston, TX

The Director of Logistics will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, requiring a blend of strategic planning and hands-on operational oversight. Key duties include:

Strategic Vision & Execution

Develop, champion, and implement the company’s long-term logistics and supply chain strategy. This includes network modeling and optimization, capacity planning, and identifying key initiatives to enhance service levels while driving down costs. End-to-End Operational Excellence

Assume full ownership of all logistics operations, including inbound transportation from domestic and international suppliers, multi-site warehouse and distribution center management, inventory control, and outbound transportation to stores and e-commerce customers. Inspirational Team Leadership

Strategic Partner & Vendor Management

Cultivate and manage strong, strategic relationships with key third-party logistics (3PL) providers, freight carriers, brokers, and other supply chain partners. Lead the negotiation of complex, multi-million dollar contracts and ensure partners are held accountable to stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs) through regular performance scorecards and Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs).

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Mitigation

Ensure all logistics and transportation activities adhere to local, state, and federal regulations, including those set by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and OSHA. Proactively identify potential risks within the supply chain and develop robust contingency and business continuity plans to mitigate disruptions.

Seamless Cross-Functional Integration

Serve as the primary logistics liaison to other key departments, including Merchandising, Procurement, Planning, Retail Operations, and Customer Service. We are seeking a seasoned and accomplished leader with a deep understanding of the retail supply chain ecosystem. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.

Extensive Leadership Experience

A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in logistics and supply chain management, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role overseeing large-scale, complex distribution operations. Direct experience within the retail, CPG, or e-commerce industries is strongly preferred.

Proven Operational Expertise

Demonstrated success in managing multi-site warehousing, inbound/outbound transportation networks, and fleet operations. A strong background in network design, process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma), and project management is essential.

Financial Acumen

Proven experience managing large and complex P&Ls and operating budgets (e.g., budgets exceeding $50M annually). Must possess strong analytical skills with the ability to model financial scenarios and build compelling business cases for investment.

Technical Proficiency

Advanced proficiency with modern supply chain technologies, including Tier-1 WMS and TMS platforms, as well as ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle). Experience with data visualization and business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) is a significant asset.

Strategic & Analytical Mindset

The ability to think strategically and translate broad corporate objectives into actionable logistics plans. Must be highly analytical, with a data-driven approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
