In this capacity, you will be the principal architect of the company’s physical supply chain. You will oversee a complex ecosystem encompassing inbound freight, multi-site fulfillment center operations, inventory management, outbound transportation, and the increasingly crucial last-mile delivery network. The e-commerce landscape is defined by its demand for speed, accuracy, and cost-efficiency. Key Responsibilities of Director of Logistics with a Major E-commerce Platform – Houston, TX
Strategic Network Design & Execution
Develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive, long-term logistics and supply chain strategy that aligns with the company’s aggressive growth objectives. This includes network modeling, site selection for new fulfillment centers, and designing scalable processes for inventory flow and order fulfillment.
End-to-End Operations Management
Provide executive oversight for all logistics operations, including inbound receiving, inventory control and accuracy, warehousing, order picking and packing, and outbound shipping across a network of distribution and fulfillment centers.
Transportation & Last-Mile Delivery Leadership
Mastermind the company’s domestic and international transportation strategy. Negotiate and manage relationships with a diverse portfolio of carriers, including parcel, LTL, FTL, and last-mile delivery partners. Continuously analyze and optimize for cost, speed, and reliability.
Team Leadership & Development
Build, lead, and mentor a high-caliber logistics organization. Cultivate a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation. Set clear performance expectations and KPIs, providing regular feedback and coaching to develop future leaders within the team.
Budgetary & Financial Oversight
Develop and manage the multi-million dollar logistics budget, including forecasting, variance analysis, and cost-control initiatives. Demonstrate strong P&L ownership and identify key levers for improving operational efficiency and reducing cost-per-unit.
Vendor & 3PL Partnership Management
Lead the selection, negotiation, and management of key third-party logistics (3PL) providers and other critical vendors. Establish rigorous Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and performance scorecards to ensure partners meet and exceed operational and quality standards.
Technology & Systems Innovation
Champion the evaluation and implementation of cutting-edge logistics technologies, including advanced Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), automation, robotics, and data analytics platforms to drive efficiency and visibility.
Performance Analytics & Continuous Improvement
Establish a robust framework for tracking, analyzing, and reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, order accuracy, cost per shipment, and inventory turns. Utilize data to drive a continuous improvement mindset throughout the operation, leveraging methodologies like Lean and Six Sigma. Continuously evaluate and implement industry best practices, staying ahead of trends as defined by leading organizations like the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as the primary logistics liaison to the executive team and other key departments. Work seamlessly with Merchandising, Planning, Technology, Finance, and Customer Service to ensure alignment and optimize the end-to-end value chain.
Risk Management & Compliance
Ensure all logistics and transportation activities comply with federal, state, and local regulations. Proactively identify potential risks within the supply chain and develop robust contingency plans to mitigate disruptions.
Requirements for the Director of Logistics with a Major E-commerce Platform – Houston, TX
Educational Background
A Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Extensive Leadership Experience
A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in supply chain and logistics management, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role (Director level or above) overseeing large, complex operations.
E-commerce/DTC Expertise
Deep, demonstrable experience within a high-volume, direct-to-consumer (DTC) e-commerce or omnichannel retail environment is essential. You must understand the unique challenges and velocity of this sector.
Proven Team Builder
A track record of successfully hiring, training, and developing large, geographically dispersed teams. Must possess exceptional leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills.
Strategic & Analytical Mindset
Strong strategic planning capabilities combined with a highly analytical approach to problem-solving. Ability to translate complex data into actionable insights and strategic direction.
Technical Proficiency
Expert-level knowledge of modern logistics technologies, including Tier-1 WMS and TMS platforms. Proficiency with data analysis tools and ERP systems is required.
Financial Acumen
Demonstrated experience in developing and managing large, complex budgets with a focus on cost optimization and ROI. Strong P&L management skills are a must.
Negotiation & Vendor Management Skills
Superior negotiation skills with a history of successfully managing contracts and relationships with major carriers, 3PLs, and technology vendors.
Communication Skills
Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills. The ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, from warehouse associates to the C-suite.
Location
The candidate must be based in or willing to relocate to the greater Houston, TX area. This is an on-site leadership role.
