Key Responsibilities of Director of Logistics & Distribution with a 3PL – Memphis, TN

Strategic Leadership and Business Development

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive long-term strategy for the logistics and distribution division that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives and growth targets.
  • Identify and evaluate new market opportunities, service offerings, and technological advancements to maintain a competitive edge and drive revenue growth.
  • Lead the annual strategic planning and budgeting process for the division, setting ambitious yet achievable goals and KPIs.
  • Champion a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, encouraging the adoption of best practices and lean methodologies across all operations.
  • Collaborate closely with the executive leadership team on M&A activities, network design, and major capital expenditure projects.

Operational Excellence and Performance Management

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of multi-site warehousing, order fulfillment, inventory management, and transportation operations to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, order accuracy, inventory turns, cost-per-unit, and safety incidents.
  • Implement and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency and quality across the network, while adhering to all industry regulations and compliance standards (e.g., OSHA, DOT, C-TPAT).
  • Drive operational efficiency by optimizing warehouse layouts, workflows, labor management, and material handling equipment utilization.
  • Lead carrier management strategy, including sourcing, negotiation of rates and contracts, and performance management to ensure cost-effective and reliable transportation solutions.
  • Oversee the implementation and optimization of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and other supply chain technologies to enhance visibility and productivity.

Financial Acumen and P&L Management

  • Assume full P&L responsibility for the logistics and distribution division, including revenue forecasting, expense management, and profitability analysis.
  • Develop and manage the annual operating and capital budgets, ensuring financial targets are met or exceeded.
  • Conduct regular financial reviews to analyze performance, identify variances, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Identify and execute cost-reduction initiatives without compromising service quality or safety standards.
  • Provide detailed financial reporting and business insights to the executive team and key stakeholders.

Team Leadership and Talent Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of logistics professionals, including site managers, operations managers, and support staff.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and safety-first work environment that promotes employee engagement and retention.
  • Establish clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback and coaching, and manage the performance appraisal process.
  • Champion talent development and succession planning initiatives to build a strong leadership pipeline within the organization.
  • Ensure all team members receive appropriate training on safety protocols, operational procedures, and company policies.

Requirements for the Director of Logistics & Distribution with a 3PL – Memphis, TN

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in logistics and supply chain management, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role (Director level or equivalent).
  • Demonstrable and extensive experience working within a Third-Party Logistics (3PL) environment is mandatory.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing large-scale, multi-site warehousing and distribution operations.
  • Strong financial acumen with hands-on experience managing a significant P&L, developing budgets, and driving profitability.
  • Expert knowledge of modern warehousing, inventory control, and transportation management principles and practices.
  • In-depth understanding of relevant regulatory requirements, including OSHA, DOT, and HAZMAT.
  • Proficiency with advanced Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Transportation Management Systems (TMS).
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate large teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant field is highly preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CSCP (Certified Supply Chain Professional) from APICS/ASCM or CLTD (Certified in Logistics, Transportation and Distribution).
  • Experience with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Proven experience in managing logistics for diverse industries, such as retail, e-commerce, consumer goods, or healthcare.
  • Strong project management skills and experience leading complex implementation projects.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and effectively manage competing priorities.
  • A deep understanding of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) best practices and industry trends.
