The Director, Inbound Supply Chain holds ultimate accountability for the strategic direction and operational execution of all activities related to the movement of merchandise from domestic and international suppliers to the company’s distribution and fulfillment centers. This executive position requires a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of global logistics, transportation networks, and advanced supply chain technologies. Strategic Planning and Execution

Develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive long-term vision and strategy for the inbound supply chain that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Drive key initiatives in network design, transportation management, and technology adoption to build a competitive advantage.

Operational Leadership

Provide senior leadership and oversight for all inbound logistics operations, including ocean freight, drayage, customs brokerage, and all modes of domestic transportation (Truckload, LTL, Intermodal). Vendor and Carrier Management

Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships with a diverse portfolio of ocean carriers, 3PLs, freight forwarders, and domestic transportation providers. Financial Acumen and Budgetary Control

Assume full P&L responsibility for the inbound logistics budget. Develop annual operating plans, forecasts, and financial models. Meticulously track and report on financial performance, identifying and executing on cost-saving opportunities without compromising service quality.

Technology and Systems Innovation

Champion the evaluation and implementation of next-generation supply chain technologies, including advanced Transportation Management Systems (TMS), predictive analytics, and AI/ML tools to improve forecasting, optimization, and achieve end-to-end supply chain visibility.

Serve as a key strategic partner to executive leadership in Merchandising, Inventory Planning, Sourcing, and Finance. Ensure tight alignment on forecasts, promotions, and new product introductions to guarantee supply chain readiness and execution.

Performance Management and Analytics

Establish, monitor, and report on a comprehensive set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the inbound network, including on-time performance, cost per unit, carrier compliance, lead time variability, and forecast accuracy. Use data to drive insights and strategic decisions.

Risk Management and Compliance

Proactively identify potential risks within the supply chain (e.g., port congestion, geopolitical issues, carrier capacity constraints) and develop robust contingency plans. Ensure strict compliance with all international trade and transportation regulations.

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.

Executive Experience

A minimum of 12-15 years of progressive experience in supply chain management, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role overseeing large-scale logistics operations for a major retailer, CPG, or logistics company.

Inbound Logistics Expertise

Deep, demonstrated expertise in managing all facets of a complex, high-volume inbound supply chain, including international logistics, import/export operations, customs compliance, and multi-modal domestic transportation.
