Key Responsibilities of Director of Global Sourcing
Strategic Sourcing Leadership
Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive global sourcing strategies aligned with the company’s overall business objectives, focusing on cost reduction, quality improvement, risk mitigation, and supply chain resilience.
Supplier Relationship Management (SRM)
Establish and nurture strong, long-term relationships with key global suppliers. Drive regular performance reviews, manage supplier scorecards, and implement continuous improvement programs to ensure optimal performance and adherence to contractual agreements.
Cost Optimization & Value Creation
Identify and execute opportunities for cost savings and value generation across all spend categories, including direct materials, indirect goods, and services. Utilize advanced negotiation tactics, market intelligence, and total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing global sourcing team. Foster a collaborative environment, provide ongoing coaching, and set clear performance objectives to ensure individual and team success.
Contract Negotiation & Management
Lead complex contract negotiations with international suppliers, ensuring favorable terms, conditions, and service level agreements. Oversee the entire contract lifecycle, from drafting to execution and renewal.
Risk Management & Mitigation
Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate supply chain risks, including geopolitical factors, natural disasters, economic volatility, and supplier solvency. Develop contingency plans to ensure continuity of supply.
Market Research & Intelligence
Stay abreast of global market trends, commodity price fluctuations, technological advancements, and geopolitical developments that may impact sourcing strategies. Provide insightful analysis and recommendations to senior management.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Partner closely with R&D, Engineering, Manufacturing, Finance, Legal, and Sales teams to understand material requirements, product roadmaps, and business needs, ensuring sourcing strategies support company-wide goals.
Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing
Champion ethical sourcing practices, promote supplier diversity, and drive initiatives to enhance environmental sustainability throughout the supply chain. Ensure compliance with international labor and environmental standards.
Technology & Process Improvement
Evaluate and implement new sourcing technologies, e-procurement platforms, and best-practice processes to enhance efficiency, transparency, and control within the global sourcing function.
Performance Metrics & Reporting
Define, track, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for global sourcing, including savings achieved, supplier performance, risk exposure, and compliance. Present regular updates to executive leadership.
Budget Management
Manage the global sourcing budget effectively, ensuring resources are allocated optimally to achieve strategic objectives while adhering to financial guidelines.
Requirements for the Director of Global Sourcing
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is highly preferred.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in global sourcing, procurement, or supply chain management, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership or directorial role overseeing international operations.
