Role Overview for Director of Engineering, Aerospace & Defense

JRG Partners is proud to partner with a leading Aerospace & Defense company in its search for a technically deep and innovative Director of Engineering. Based in Charlotte, NC, this leadership role owns the technology, R&D, and product-innovation agenda.

Reporting directly to the VP of Engineering, the Director of Engineering will lead R&D and engineering across the portfolio, setting technical direction and driving the innovation pipeline.

Key Responsibilities of Director of Engineering, Aerospace & Defense

The role will lead R&D and engineering, with responsibilities including but not limited to:

R&D Strategy

Define and execute an R&D strategy and technology roadmap aligned with business objectives.

Product Development

Lead product and process development from concept through launch.

Innovation Pipeline

Manage the innovation pipeline through a disciplined stage-gate process.

Engineering Leadership

Lead engineering teams, practices, and standards to deliver quality and velocity.

Product Architecture

Guide architecture to ensure scalability, quality, and differentiation.

Emerging Technology

Evaluate and adopt emerging technologies that create competitive advantage.

Intellectual Property

Build and protect the company’s IP portfolio with legal counsel.

Quality & Reliability

Ensure quality and reliability are engineered in from the outset.

Commercialization

Partner with commercial and operations teams to bring products to market.

Technical Partnerships

Build technology and supplier partnerships that extend capability.

Budget & Resource Management

Manage the R&D budget and resources to maximize return on investment.

Talent & Team Building

Attract, develop, and lead a high-performing technical organization.

Requirements for the Director of Engineering, Aerospace & Defense

Education

A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field is required; an advanced degree is strongly preferred.

Experience

Progressive R&D and engineering experience, including technical leadership within a comparable industry.

Technical Expertise

Deep expertise in product and process development, engineering, and innovation.

Commercialization Record

A proven track record bringing new products successfully to market.

Leadership

Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and inspire technical teams.

Strategic & Business Acumen

The ability to connect technology to market opportunity and make sound decisions.

IP Knowledge

Experience building and protecting intellectual property.

Communication

Strong communication skills across technical and business audiences.

Analytical Skills

Excellent problem-solving skills and command of development data.

Citizenship
