Key Responsibilities of Chief Scientific Officer – San Diego, CA

Strategic R&D Leadership
Develop and execute a comprehensive, forward-thinking scientific and technical strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Champion a robust product pipeline from early-stage discovery and feasibility through development, verification, validation, and commercialization.
Innovation and Pipeline Management
Drive the identification and evaluation of new technologies, therapeutic areas, and product opportunities. Implement and oversee a disciplined stage-gate process for product development, ensuring projects meet critical milestones, stay within budget, and adhere to the highest quality standards.
Team Development and Mentorship
Lead, inspire, and grow a multidisciplinary team of world-class scientists, engineers, and technical staff. Intellectual Property Strategy
Oversee the company’s intellectual property portfolio in collaboration with legal counsel. Drive the strategy for patent filings, trade secrets, and publications to build a formidable and defensible IP position that provides a sustainable competitive advantage.
Regulatory and Quality Compliance
Ensure all research and development activities are conducted in strict compliance with applicable global regulatory standards. Provide scientific leadership and support for regulatory submissions to agencies such as the FDA, EMA, and other international bodies. A deep understanding of FDA regulations for Class II and Class III medical devices is paramount.
Budget and Resource Management
Assume full P&L responsibility for the R&D organization. Develop and manage the annual R&D budget, ensuring optimal allocation of capital, personnel, and resources to achieve strategic goals and maximize return on investment.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as a key member of the executive team, working closely with the CEO, COO, and leaders in Clinical Affairs, Marketing, Sales, and Operations to ensure seamless product development and successful market launch. Translate complex scientific information for diverse internal and external stakeholders.
External Engagement and Thought Leadership
Represent the company at scientific conferences, investor meetings, and industry events. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), academic institutions, and strategic partners. Serve as the company’s primary scientific spokesperson to the external community.
Requirements for the Chief Scientific Officer – San Diego, CA
This executive role requires a unique combination of advanced scientific knowledge, extensive industry experience, and exceptional leadership qualities. We are seeking a candidate who not only meets but exceeds the following qualifications:
Educational Background
An M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline (e.g., Biomedical Engineering, Molecular Biology, Physics, Chemistry) is required.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in the medical device industry, with at least 10 years in a senior R&D leadership role (e.g., VP of R&D, Senior Director). Direct experience serving on an executive leadership team is highly preferred.
Product Development Track Record
Demonstrable success in leading the development and commercialization of multiple complex medical devices, preferably in the Class II or Class III categories. Proven ability to guide products through the entire lifecycle, from concept to post-market surveillance.
Technical Expertise
Deep technical expertise in a relevant area of medical device technology, such as implantables, surgical robotics, diagnostic imaging, wearables, or therapeutic energy devices.
Regulatory Acumen
Extensive experience with global regulatory processes, including successful 510(k) and PMA submissions to the FDA. Thorough understanding of GMP, ISO 13485, and other quality system requirements.
Leadership and Management Skills
Exceptional leadership capabilities with a proven ability to build, manage, and motivate large, high-performing technical teams. A history of attracting and retaining top-tier talent is essential.
Strategic and Business Acumen
Strong business and financial acumen, with experience in R&D budget management, strategic planning, and portfolio analysis. Experience in M&A due diligence is a significant plus.

Outstanding written and verbal communication skills. The ability to articulate a compelling scientific vision and present complex data clearly to a wide range of audiences, including board members, investors, regulatory bodies, and internal teams.
