The COO will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Strategic Leadership & P&L Management
Assume full P&L responsibility for all operational functions. Develop and execute a multi-year operational strategy that aligns with the company’s growth targets, enhances profitability, and strengthens competitive advantage. Collaborate with the CEO and other C-suite executives on long-range planning, M&A due diligence, and capital allocation strategies.
Operational Excellence & Manufacturing Oversight
Direct and oversee all manufacturing activities across multiple plant sites. Implement and refine best-in-class operational processes using methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Total Quality Management (TQM) to drive efficiency, reduce waste, and improve product throughput. Champion a culture of continuous improvement and operational discipline.
Supply Chain & Logistics Optimization
Lead the entire supply chain function, including procurement, strategic sourcing, inventory management, warehousing, and global logistics. Develop a resilient and cost-effective supply chain strategy that mitigates risk, ensures security of supply, and meets the dynamic needs of our customers.
Environmental, Health, Safety & Quality (EHSQ) Leadership
Uphold and advance the company’s commitment to world-class safety performance. Ensure rigorous compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.). Foster a proactive safety culture where every employee is an owner of safety. Ensure all operations adhere to the highest industry standards, including principles outlined in the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® program. Oversee the Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) departments to guarantee products consistently meet or exceed customer specifications.
Capital Project Management
Oversee the planning, budgeting, and execution of major capital expenditure (CapEx) projects, including plant expansions, equipment upgrades, and new technology implementation. Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the specified quality standards.
Financial Acumen & Budgetary Control
Develop and manage the annual operating budget and financial forecasts. Analyze operational performance and key metrics to identify trends, opportunities for cost reduction, and areas for investment. Present detailed operational and financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors.
Team Development & Mentorship
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of operational leaders, including Plant Managers, and Directors of Supply Chain, EHS, and Quality. Foster a collaborative and empowering environment that attracts, retains, and develops top talent. Implement robust succession planning for critical operational roles.
Requirements for the Chief Operating Officer with a Specialty Chemicals Co. – Baton Rouge, LA
We are seeking a seasoned and accomplished leader with the following qualifications:
Educational Background
A Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or a closely related technical field is required. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) or other advanced degree is strongly preferred.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience within the chemical manufacturing industry, with at least 5-7 years in a senior executive role (e.g., VP of Operations, General Manager, COO) with significant P&L responsibility.
Industry Expertise
Deep and extensive experience in the specialty chemicals sector is mandatory. Experience with batch processing, continuous manufacturing, and complex chemical synthesis is highly desirable.
Operational Acumen
Demonstrated expertise in implementing continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma). Proven track record of successfully managing multi-site manufacturing operations and complex supply chains.
Safety & Regulatory Knowledge
In-depth knowledge of process safety management (PSM), EHS regulations, and quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001). A history of leading organizations to top-tier safety performance is essential.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to inspire trust, build consensus, and influence stakeholders at all levels, from the plant floor to the boardroom.
Financial & Strategic Skills
Strong financial literacy, with experience in budgeting, forecasting, and capital project evaluation. A strategic mindset with the ability to analyze complex situations and make decisive, data-informed decisions.
Location
The candidate must be willing to be based in the Baton Rouge, LA area and travel as required to other company sites and for customer or supplier meetings.
