Innovation Strategy & Vision
Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive long-term innovation strategy that aligns with the company’s overarching business objectives. Product Portfolio & Pipeline Management
Assume full ownership of the product development portfolio from concept to obsolescence. Make critical go/no-go decisions to optimize resource allocation.
R&D Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and inspire a high-performing organization of engineers, scientists, and technical staff. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and results-oriented environment. Recruit top-tier talent and develop career pathways to ensure the long-term strength and capability of the R&D function.
Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy
In partnership with legal counsel, direct the company’s global intellectual property strategy. Oversee the entire IP process, including invention disclosure, patent filing, freedom-to-operate analyses, and competitive IP intelligence to build and defend a formidable patent estate that provides a sustainable competitive advantage.
Regulatory & Clinical Excellence
Serve as a key strategic partner to the Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Affairs teams. Ensure that all R&D activities are conducted in strict compliance with global regulatory standards. Provide expert guidance on navigating complex FDA regulatory pathways (e.g., 510(k), De Novo, PMA) and international requirements (e.g., EU MDR/IVDR).
Executive & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Act as a vital member of the senior executive leadership team, contributing to the overall strategic direction of the company. Collaborate seamlessly with Commercial, Operations, Quality Assurance, and Finance leaders to ensure alignment and facilitate smooth product launches and effective lifecycle management.
External Innovation & Strategic Partnerships

Fiscal & Resource Management
Develop and manage the multi-million dollar annual R&D budget, ensuring the efficient allocation of capital, personnel, and resources to high-priority initiatives. Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the R&D organization, providing regular, transparent updates to the CEO and Board of Directors.
Requirements for the Chief Innovation Officer – Philadelphia, PA
We are seeking an exceptional individual with a distinguished track record of innovation and leadership in the medical device sector. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Educational Background
An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant technical field such as Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related life sciences discipline is required. An MBA or equivalent business degree is strongly preferred.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive experience within the medical device industry, with at least 10 years in senior R&D leadership roles (e.g., VP of R&D, CTO, Head of Innovation). Verifiable experience as a member of a company’s executive leadership team is essential.
Commercialization Success
A proven and demonstrable track record of successfully leading the development and global commercialization of multiple complex, novel medical devices from concept through market launch. Technical & Clinical Depth

Regulatory Acumen
Extensive, hands-on experience navigating the global regulatory landscape for medical devices, particularly with the FDA for Class II and Class III devices and an in-depth understanding of the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR).
