Key Responsibilities of Chief Accounting Officer with a PE-backed Telecom Co. – Atlanta, GA
Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-caliber accounting team. Foster a culture of excellence, continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration. Structure the department for scalability to support rapid company growth.
Financial Reporting & Close Process
Oversee the entire month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency. Prepare and present comprehensive financial statements and reporting packages for executive management, the Board, and PE sponsors, complete with insightful analysis and commentary.
Technical Accounting & Policy
Serve as the company’s subject matter expert on complex technical accounting issues. Research, interpret, and implement new accounting pronouncements. Develop, document, and maintain all corporate accounting policies and procedures in accordance with U.S. GAAP. Address complex areas relevant to the telecom industry, such as revenue recognition (ASC 606), lease accounting (ASC 842), and accounting for capital assets and infrastructure projects.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Design, implement, and maintain a robust internal control environment, ensuring SOX-like compliance. Proactively identify and mitigate financial risks. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal tax regulations and reporting requirements.
Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A) Integration
Play a critical leadership role in the financial due diligence of potential acquisition targets. Lead the post-acquisition integration of accounting functions, including purchase accounting, system consolidation, and the harmonization of accounting policies and procedures.
Audit & External Relationships
Manage the relationship with external auditors, overseeing the successful and timely completion of the annual financial audit. Serve as the primary point of contact for banking and other key financial partners.
Treasury & Cash Management
Oversee treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting, working capital management, and debt covenant compliance. Develop strategies to optimize cash position and manage financial risk effectively.
Systems & Process Improvement
Drive the continuous improvement and automation of accounting systems and processes. Lead initiatives to enhance the functionality of the ERP system and other financial tools to create efficiencies and improve the quality of financial data.
Strategic Partnership
Act as a true business partner to the CFO and other senior leaders. Provide financial insights and strategic support for key business initiatives, including budgeting, forecasting, and long-range planning.

Educational & Professional Certification
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required. An active CPA license is mandatory. An MBA is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 15+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Corporate Controller, VP of Accounting, or existing CAO).
Industry Background
Significant experience within the telecommunications, technology, or a related recurring-revenue industry is strongly preferred.
Public Accounting Foundation
A strong foundation in public accounting is required, with Big 4 experience being highly desirable. This ensures a deep understanding of technical accounting, audit processes, and internal controls.
Private Equity Environment
Demonstrable experience working within a private equity-backed company is essential. The candidate must understand the pace, reporting requirements, and exit-focused mentality of a PE environment.
M&A Expertise
Proven, hands-on experience with the full lifecycle of M&A transactions, from due diligence through to complex post-merger integration, is a critical requirement.
Technical Prowess
Deep and extensive knowledge of U.S. GAAP, SEC reporting standards (even in a private setting), and internal controls frameworks (COSO).
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership and team-building skills with a track record of attracting, developing, and retaining top talent. Must be a player-coach who can be both strategic and hands-on.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
Superior written and verbal communication skills. The ability to distill complex financial concepts into clear, concise information for non-financial stakeholders is paramount. Must possess the executive presence and credibility to effectively interact with the executive team, board members, and investors.
Systems Acumen
Experience with large-scale ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Oracle, SAP) and a demonstrated ability to leverage technology to improve accounting processes.
