Key Responsibilities of Chief Accounting Officer with a Global Logistics Firm – Indianapolis, IN
Global Accounting Leadership
Direct and oversee all aspects of the company’s global accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, and financial reporting. Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing, geographically dispersed accounting team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Manage the timely and accurate preparation of all internal and external financial statements and reports in accordance with U.S. GAAP and IFRS standards. If applicable, oversee all SEC reporting processes, including the preparation and filing of Forms 10-K, 10-Q, and 8-K. Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal, and international government reporting requirements and tax filings.
Technical Accounting Expertise
Serve as the company’s primary subject matter expert on complex technical accounting issues. Research, interpret, and implement new accounting pronouncements and standards, assessing their impact on the organization. Provide guidance on the accounting treatment of complex transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, revenue recognition, and lease accounting.
Internal Controls & Risk Management
Design, implement, and maintain a robust and effective internal control environment compliant with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements. Continuously evaluate and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and systems to mitigate risk and ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial information.
Process Optimization & Scalability
Drive strategic initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the accounting function. Lead the evaluation and implementation of new financial systems and technologies (ERP, automation tools) to streamline processes, enhance reporting capabilities, and support the company’s continued growth and scalability.
Audit & External Relationships
Manage the relationship with the company’s independent external auditors. Oversee the planning and execution of the annual financial audit and quarterly reviews, ensuring a smooth and efficient process. Serve as a key point of contact for banking partners and other external financial stakeholders.
Strategic Business Partnership
Collaborate closely with the CFO, FP&A team, and other senior executives to provide financial analysis, insights, and support for key business decisions. Participate in strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes. Present financial results and complex accounting matters to the executive leadership team, audit committee, and board of directors with clarity and confidence.
Treasury & Tax Collaboration
Work in close partnership with the Treasury function to manage cash flow, debt covenants, and banking relationships. Collaborate with the corporate tax department to ensure effective tax planning, strategy, and compliance on a global scale.
Requirements for the Chief Accounting Officer with a Global Logistics Firm – Indianapolis, IN
Education & Certification
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is mandatory. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 15+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., Corporate Controller, VP of Accounting, or existing CAO) within a large, complex organization.
Industry Background
Significant experience within the logistics, transportation, supply chain, or a related asset-heavy industry is strongly preferred. A deep understanding of the financial and operational drivers of this sector is crucial.
Global & Public Company Experience
Demonstrable experience managing accounting functions for a multinational corporation with significant international operations is required. Prior experience in a publicly traded company, including direct involvement with SEC reporting and SOX compliance, is a significant asset.
Technical Acumen
Unquestionable expertise in U.S. GAAP and a strong understanding of IFRS. Proven ability to research and resolve complex technical accounting issues. Extensive experience with large-scale ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) and financial consolidation software.
