Key Responsibilities of VP, Quality Management System (QMS) with an Automotive Supplier – Toledo, OH

The VP of QMS will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Strategic Quality Leadership

Develop and deploy a comprehensive, forward-thinking quality strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Establish a clear vision for quality excellence and communicate it effectively across all departments and facilities. Champion a ‘zero-defect’ mindset throughout the organization.

QMS Architecture and Compliance

Assume full ownership of the Quality Management System, ensuring its ongoing development, implementation, and maintenance. Guarantee compliance with all relevant industry standards, with a primary focus on the IATF 16949:2016 standard, as well as ISO 9001 and specific customer requirements.

Operational Performance and Continuous Improvement

Drive the reduction of quality-related costs, including scrap, rework, and warranty claims. Implement and oversee robust continuous improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Kaizen events. Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) for quality, including Parts Per Million (PPM), First Time Through (FTT), and Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ).

Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis

Lead and mentor teams in advanced problem-solving techniques (e.g., 8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams) to effectively address and eliminate the root causes of quality issues. Ensure timely and effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) are implemented and verified.

Customer and Supplier Quality Assurance

Act as the senior point of contact for all customer quality matters, fostering strong relationships with OEM quality executives. Proactively manage customer concerns and ensure swift resolution. Develop and manage a comprehensive Supplier Quality Assurance (SQA) program, including supplier audits, development, and performance monitoring.

Audit Management

Spearhead and oversee a robust internal and external audit program. Ensure all facilities are prepared for and successfully pass customer audits (e.g., VDA 6.3) and third-party IATF 16949 certification and surveillance audits. Drive the timely closure of all audit findings.

New Product Introduction (NPI)

Provide quality leadership throughout the Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process for new programs. Ensure the successful execution of Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) submissions to customers, guaranteeing flawless launches.

Team Leadership and Development

Build, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing, multi-site quality organization. Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, and foster a culture of accountability and professional growth. Manage the departmental budget and allocate resources effectively to achieve quality goals.

Data Analysis and Technology

Champion the use of statistical process control (SPC) and other data analysis tools to monitor process capability and drive data-driven decision-making. Evaluate and implement new quality-related technologies and software systems to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Candidates must possess a proven track record of executive leadership and deep expertise in automotive quality systems. The ideal profile includes:

Education

A Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA or MS in a technical discipline) is strongly preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in quality assurance and quality management within the manufacturing sector. At least 7-10 years of this experience must be in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., Director or VP of Quality) within a Tier-1 or Tier-2 automotive supplier environment. Demonstrable experience working directly with major North American and international OEMs is essential.

Technical Expertise

Expert-level knowledge and practical application of the IATF 16949 standard is mandatory. Certified IATF 16949 Lead Auditor is a significant plus. Comprehensive understanding and proficiency in the automotive core tools (APQP, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, MSA).

Certifications

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt certification is highly desirable. American Society for Quality (ASQ) certifications such as Certified Quality Manager (CQM) or Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) are also valued.

Leadership Skills

Proven ability to lead, influence, and motivate cross-functional teams in a multi-site environment. Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving capabilities. A history of successfully driving cultural change and implementing large-scale quality initiatives.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Superior verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, from the shop floor to the executive boardroom and key customers. Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills are critical.

Business Acumen

A strong understanding of the financial implications of quality performance. Ability to develop and manage departmental budgets and make compelling business cases for quality improvement investments.

Travel

Willingness and ability to travel domestically and potentially internationally to other plant locations, customer sites, and supplier facilities as needed (estimated 25-30%).
