Key Responsibilities of Chief Technology Officer with a Digital Media Group – Austin, TX

The Chief Technology Officer will have a broad range of responsibilities, encompassing strategic leadership, technical execution, and team management. Your primary objective will be to ensure the company’s technology resources are aligned with its business needs and growth trajectory. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Strategic Technology Leadership

Develop and articulate a clear, long-term technology vision and strategy that aligns with the company’s strategic goals. Proactively research and identify emerging technologies (AI/ML, blockchain, AR/VR) and assess their potential to create business value and competitive advantage. Serve as the top technology advocate and advisor to the executive team and board of directors.

Engineering & Product Development Oversight

Lead and mentor the entire engineering organization, including software development, data science, quality assurance, and DevOps. Champion best practices in software development, including agile methodologies, CI/CD, and automated testing, to ensure rapid, high-quality delivery of products and features. Partner closely with the Chief Product Officer to define the product roadmap and ensure technical feasibility.

Platform Architecture & Scalability

Own the architecture of all technology platforms, including consumer-facing websites, mobile applications, content management systems (CMS), and video streaming infrastructure. Ensure all systems are designed for high availability, scalability, and performance to handle significant traffic growth and global reach. Oversee cloud infrastructure strategy (AWS, GCP, Azure), optimizing for cost, performance, and reliability.

Data Strategy & Analytics

Architect and manage the company’s data infrastructure, including data warehousing, ETL processes, and business intelligence tools. Champion a data-driven culture by empowering teams with the tools and insights needed to make informed decisions. Ensure the integrity, security, and privacy of all user and company data.

Ad-Tech & Monetization Systems

Oversee the technology stack that supports advertising and other revenue streams. Work with revenue teams to implement and optimize programmatic advertising solutions, subscription platforms, and other monetization technologies to maximize yield and user experience.

Cybersecurity & Compliance

Establish and enforce a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy to protect company assets and user data from threats. Ensure compliance with relevant regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and other data privacy laws. Conduct regular security audits and risk assessments.

Team Building & Talent Management

Recruit, develop, and retain a world-class technology team. Foster a positive, innovative, and inclusive engineering culture that promotes ownership and continuous learning. Implement professional development programs and mentorship opportunities for team members.

Budget & Vendor Management

Develop and manage the annual technology budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources. Evaluate and manage relationships with third-party technology vendors, partners, and contractors, negotiating contracts to ensure favorable terms and high-quality service delivery.

Requirements for the Chief Technology Officer with a Digital Media Group – Austin, TX

We are looking for a seasoned executive with a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic business acumen, and exceptional leadership skills. The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:

Executive Experience

A minimum of 15 years of experience in technology, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., VP of Engineering, Head of Technology, CTO) overseeing large, cross-functional technology teams.

Industry Expertise

Proven experience within the digital media, entertainment, publishing, or ad-tech industries is highly required. A deep understanding of content delivery networks (CDNs), video streaming protocols (HLS, DASH), ad servers, and data management platforms (DMPs) is essential.

Technical Acumen

A strong foundation in software engineering and systems architecture. Hands-on experience with modern technology stacks, including cloud computing (AWS preferred), microservices architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and various programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, Go, JavaScript).

Leadership & Communication

Demonstrated ability to lead, inspire, and mentor a diverse team of technologists. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders and influence decision-making at the executive level.

Strategic Mindset

Education

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is a plus.
